Let just say you grew a 300lb record setting watermelon next year. What would you do? Would you give seeds away, sell them, or keep them for yourself? What would you do with the melon after the weight offs, and would you expect nation exposure like the pumpkins growers recieve. I know we all are trying to break records wheather it be a personal best or the world record, but have you ever wondered what IF..........

Thought about it all summer ! LOL

Wouldn't expect anywhere near the exposure as the pumpkins do. They are popular in NC so you would get good press over there.
Seeds = give some to all of us ! LOL

Sure you could sell them and make a few bucks. I suppose I could keep all my tips and techniques to myself, and not freely share seeds. Then an individual person or two could corner the market on growing giants, but if you have no competition, I suppose it doesn't matter much.

Although some people may have different thoughts, my belief is that I am not in this for the money, and I don't see growing giants as my path to being rich and famous.

With that said, nothing annoys me more than to see my seeds being sold on ebay, since they were given freely in the spirit of advancing the art and science of watermelon growing.

Hey MMM, there's a great post over in the general discussion forumn, thats talking about seeds being given out and then being sold, it's sad but true. I wouldn't ever want seeds that I didn't plan on putting the the ground.
With that said, I want to thank MMM, smoky mtn pumpkin, tenn.dreamer, holloway and many others for sharing so much. Hopefully in a year or two I will be able to help as many people as ya'll do .

I see this forum as sort of a brotherhood. We are on here to help one another. There is no way I would ever consider making money off of anyone who participates in this forum.

This is the place I want to be.Competition is great and gardening is fun. That's as far as I want it to go for me.
I could understand keeping great seeds for yourself and some secret growing tips too,but I think sharing is good especially when you get feedback.
Selling freely gotten seeds on Ebay-just ain't right!

MMM is right sharing and friendly competition is the key to pushing melons ahead. The world record melon hasn't really change much in the last century. But look what the pumpkin growers have done. I think things are going to change in the watermelon world. We will see the numbers go up in the years to come.

Geno, Chris, MMM, and all...from what I know from the past several years...not counting the last three...but before that (and don't get me wrong, if the seed sharing started a year or two earlier), the only place to get Giant CC seeds, was to buy them from Bright farms website!!! Now, awl kinds of folks have GREAT CC seeds that they give away & trade!!! It is getting better, cause of several folks who use this site!!! Frank Mudd, Bill Brinkley, Chris Kent, MMM, Mr. Mitchell, and several others...the list is longer than my memory!!! The size of melons will set new records sooner than you think!!!! IMHO...and it will be someone from this site who does it, not Bright farms. I would bet my bottom dollar!!!! Kudo's to yawll and grow em BIG in 2010!!!!! Peace, Wayne

We will get there,Its a matter of when,2010? maybe,Like Wayne says with all of you sharing and crossing melons it will happen.I saved seeds from 2 melons this year of the melons I made crosses with and the 3rd one went bad before I could get seeds from but the 179.7 was the same cross so nothing lost. Most of the seeds are going to growers and clubs. This may be the first year I will run out of melon seeds in the 5 years of growing them so the hobby is growing.Wayne you ever grow any of those seeds I send you the last 2 years from the jumbo package? Working on some new ones for this raffle or fund raiser.
