Just wondering how the giant watermelons taste? What variety of seed are most of them grown from? Carolina Cross? I have seen a lot of different methods of growing them in diaries--what seems to be the most consistent methods used? I would like to try some in the future.

If you are trying to win a contest or exhibition for the biggest watermelon then Carolina Cross is the only way to go. Nothing else comes close in size. As for taste, it is an excellent melon when allowed to ripen properly on the vine. Just know it takes up to 90 days on the vine for these monsters to mature completely. As for growing methods, I am sure everyone is a little different. We use the method we beleive works best for us. And that is something we are constantly fine tuneing. For example, I grow on plactic whereas most growers don't.And there are a few things I will doing a little differently next year than I did them this year. It is a learning process and a lot of fun trying to figure out how to grow that biggest melon that will put your name in the record book.

My children generally like the taste of the carolina cross melons over the store bought melons if you can get them ripe. This year was a problem in Minnesota for full ripeness, so the taste was rather weak.
