I ordered some water polymers to mix in my hills next year. These are said to cut down on the frequency of needed waterings and to provide water to thirsty roots when it might otherwise not be available. So I am wondering if any of you other growers have tried this stuff and if so what kind of results did you have?

Never tried it. Is that the stuff in potting soil?

Tennesse, While I was here thought I would ask about some seeds. I'm thinking about planting a seprate patch at my other farm next year to grow eating melons. Did you save any Mtn Hoosier seeds? Where did you get yours from? Also did you save some of the 207s? Thanks Jake

They (Mtn Hoosier) would make good eating ones, the one he gave me was very good !

Jake, the Mountain Hoosiers came from a seed company. It is a very large melon and also will give you several melons per plant. I have saved plenty of seed. You are also welcome to seed from the 207. Please realize the 207 was open pollinated and could be crossed with the Hoosiers. My address is:Dennis Masterson,1225 Woodberry Dr.,Knoxville,Tn.,37912-3059.If you send me a bubble will you please include for me some seed from your best shaped large Carolina Cross.I am trying to grow long and well shaped melons. Thanks in advance for any seed you will trade with me.

Thanks Dennis, I remembered the 207 was open. I will plant it with the Hoosier's. If it did crossed I may get a very impressive dark rind melon. I'll send you some seeds too. My 191 had a real nice shape to it,and was pretty long.

Polymers are NOT in most potting soil. The white stuff you see in potting soil is pearlite.

Polymers absorb many times their weight in water and look something like a clear jelly in this state. I will grow my 207 because I love the look of this melon and know it could have gotten much larger under the right circumstances, and also that chances are it is self pollionated and if not that it was pollinated by another Carolia Cross. The Mountain Hoosier plants were at the opposite end of the patch so it is least likely they provided the donor pollen. So I may be a little crazy but this is a chance I will take for myself.
