Great job to the Kents! They took first place at the Allardt, Tn weigh off with a huge 259.2 pound watermelon.
It was a site to see.

Congrats to the Kents. They had an amazing year this year. 4 Monsters they grew this year. Will be interesting to see what next year brings. Allardt was a great weigh-off and the tractor show and parade were alot of fun. There was alot of giants there this year. I think there were 6 200+ melons.

I had 2 190+. I had a 191 and a 194 both were 11 pounds light. Maybe I can break the 200 lb mark next year. My 194 was only good enough for about 7th place I think. The Kents had two giants, and the Burcham family had 4 200+ melons. I heard they had 13 plants that averaged 214. I forgot to write down the results but I bet the top ten added up close to a ton.

Congratulations Chris. I think you may have had the best giant watermelon growing year of anyone in the country. So, now that your ground is rested,is it back to growing giant pumpkins next year? :) LOL!

Grass is indeed over rated Chris. I might do both my back AND front yards in melons if I thought I could get away with it.Anyway,if I can beat my personal best by as much next year as I did this year, you may be in for some stiff competition ! :-)

I should have remembered that 267. Sorry, at this stage in my life I'm afraid my short term memory is about shot.

I hate to be the first to come begging, but I could sure use an infusion of good genetics into my watermelon patch. If you could set aside some seeds for me Chris, I would be greatly appreciative. Let me know when I can send out the SASBE.

Thanks for the heads up on the 259 Kent pict Jake. It's an awesome melon for sure. Chris was featured with that melon on a local television station the other night. We have a celebrity in our midst. Your melons were prettier though if that is any consolation. It's all a learning process I think but it looks like Chris is learning an awful lot awfully fast. I hope we all break the current world record next year. Maybe with the help of some of those magical Kent seed ? Jake, just give me your address to coolvol@comcast.net and I will mail you whatever seed I have that you might want.

I looked at your diary pictures Jake and those are 2 very nice looking melons - the 191 & 194. I would be happy to have a few seed out of both of them if you have them to spare.

Chris NICE JOB !!!! I didn't have that good of a year, out of 6 plants I had 2 melons and as of July 27th didn't have any! but on Oct. 3rd weighed one at 117 LBS. not bad for the short growing time. I have tilled and planted winter rye for next year, I am only growing melons no giant pumpkins next year. I want to beat my personal best of 199.5 and beat the Ohio record of 201.5. If anyone has any seeds that they would like me to grow to try for the record let me know. I grew the 117 on a Edwards 267 I just wish it would of set one sooner I could of done it this year for the rate it was growing !
