I seen your melon in your diary. It is looking great. Don't worry about it dropping off a little they seem to do that as the season passes. I think you'll end up with a good one. I wanted to ask you about the Mountain Hoosiers How big are they. My neighbor has grown some big ones before. Do you have any crossed with carolina's?

Holloway,

Mountain Hoosiers regularly get to about 80 pounds from the description in the seed catalogs. I have 2 plants and I am letting them set on whatever they want. There are several melons on each plant and the biggest one is probably in the 80 pound plus range. Looks like they are all going to be pretty nice size melons but no giants. I just hope they are good eating.I am in a real mess as far as seed go. I have left things up to mother nature this year. Everything is open pollinated and so all crosses are possible and unknown. I know this is bad but it is too late to do anything about it now. I may be trying to raise my best Carolina Cross seed next year and end up with a Carolina Cross, Mountain Hoosier hybrid. That could be interesting though. So at seasons end anyone is welcome to seed from any of my melons but I don't think there will be much demand as these seed will be sort of a "pig in a poke".

I did a OTT on my biggest Mountain Hoosier this evening. I was pleasantly surprised. It was 146" or 95 pounds. Pretty good for a plant that is growing several other melons. I may look to see if there are any fairs going on in the area I can enter it into.

How long is thier growing season? Is it similar to CCs? What about plant size. I'd like to try some seeds from that Mountain Hoosier next year if you have some extra seed to see whay happens.

Holloway,

I am sorry I took so long to answer your questions. I was looking back through and noticed I hadn't replied. The vine size on the Mountain Hoosiers is a little smaller than the Carolina Cross and I'd say about 50 days to maturity. They certainly ripen a lot faster than the Carolinas. You are certainly welcome to all the seed you want.
