I am looking for suggestions to help control damping off on giant watermelon seedlings. For some reason they seem way more susceptible to it than just about every other plant I grow.

They must stay warm, cool soils will be there down fall. I keep mine on heat mats 75 degrees. Then soil must be warm outside also. Small hoops and soil cables will let them keep going after you plant them outside. The soil Temps in Iowa do not get warm enough until late May early June without cables. Good Luck!

If we are talking seedlings then I would start them in a soiless mix. Peat is a natural at combating Pythium. With regular dirt/compost there are going to be pathogens in it. If the seedling is week or the stem is damaged it may not be able to fight it off. Once the seedling has grown some and is on it's way all is good.
