Please excuse my ignorance as far as watermelon growing is concerned. I have received seeds from various growers and will probably try to grow one this year. Most seeds I received are white while one set is almost black. Can someone enlighten me as to why this is and which would be the better ones to grow? Thanks. Jake.

They are both colors and really does not matter which one will grow a big one.The 255 Mitchell is a dark red color seed and I have grown white one also that did good.

Most of the seeds I use are white to creme in color. I haven't seen giants that were black. That's probably just an eating melon.

I had some Kolb's Gem a few years back. They were black seeded, but I never grew one that was fit to eat.

I have some that are redish in color and some white. I have seen others that are darker in color. I don't think it really matters what color they are.

Thanks for the replies. I looked at the seed again and sure enough, they're brown, not black. they're from the 239 Leonard '08.
