Say a small time grower(s) has grown a seed that has never been grown before and it has produced a 1008,933,895 lb pumpkins would you consider it a proven or unproven seed or does it have to be grown by a big time grower or be sold at a seed auction or be widely planted ? thanks Gene

IF you grew the 1008,933,895 pumpkins then your not a small tyme grower... What are the paternal genetics of the 1008?

A proven seed is one that has produced several really large pumpkins, say over 1000 pounds. It doesn't matter who grew the pumpkin or where. The pumpkins have to have been weighed at a recognized site or with appropriate witnesses and a certified scale.

and as far as "certified" weighed...if the grower is reputable, has pics, and those are estimated weights by measures because they don't have a way to get them weighed, yea, they count.

I agree with Kyle. It shows that the seeds have good potential.

Proven to me just means grown. It can be proven to be able to grow big ones, or proven to seem to grow average ones....if its grown, then some info is proven....G

gene, you and frank have proven the 500 mitchell to be quite the producer and i would consider it proven to grow big especially in more southern lattitudes. if your 933 didn't split, the 500 mitchell would have produced both Illinois' 2nd and 3rd biggest pumpkins of all time. and i don't recall the genetics, but remember the 500 mitchell has some great old time proven genes. what was that cross again?

the 500 mitchell from what I have been told is extrememly heat resistant and is a great seed. That's why I asked for it here in san diego and plan to grow it in the future. The genetics are as good as any, I believe it is 825 Shymanski and 865 Mettler. It's a nice little gem of a seed, who let the secret out? hehehe:) kidding. Jimmy

shazzy I guess I may have worded my question a little wrong, I am not looking for the seed to be stamped a proven seed, looking for thoughts on what people consider to be a proven seed, Ken has been very generous with this seed to me and I am thinkin of maybe traden 1 for a " proven seed " and i don't want to be look at as someone wanting something for nothing. This seed does have a track record not much but it has one its a 825 shymanski x 865 mettler
