This isn't intended to start a riot but rather I think it will serve interesting to follow now that "things have changed". Many will remember the "other" eBay auction.....

Who am I kidding? It'll start a riot anyway. LOL

Nobody bid on it and there will be no issue. If someone is willing to sell their collection I wouldn't trust those seeds are the real deal. If nobody bids on it, future wanna be sellers will think twice about it. He should have donated them back to the Dills or his local club and work out a deal to get a percentage of the proceeds. I know there is certain parties out there interested in the 723 and 846, but just remember who the seller is and his motives and are they real. Again to plant a fake is disasterous for most growers when your limited to 2 or 3 plants.

String him up !! Lynch him !...yatta yatta. Dewight Blanton is his name. He's the bigwatermelons group owner. He grew giant pumpkins for a few years fighting site conditions and disease each and every year. I believe he really gave these pumpkins a true try...more than most would do. He settled in on just watermelons and has grown a 232 and a few others. My recollection was he was always an enthusiastic grower...and extremely generous with his seeds and advice...just mainly in the field that he has some strength and success in----watermelons. I personally have no doubt that the seeds he is "selling" are real and see no reason to believe they are not real.I'm not saying I agree with his tactics, but I certainly don't agree with people saying publicly he's a wacko. I also recall that he bid and won some PGPGA seed lots at an auction a few years ago...winning the ultimate package I believe, Rocky can confirm that if he wants to. Don't bid if you don't want to. I'm not. Someone will. One of YOU will anonymously...Ill GUARANTEE that !...G

Glen, I do not think Marc was calling him a "wacko". Marc may have had another person in mind.
Based on past auctions, the first three seeds listed normally sell for over $200 each.
The site counter says that 166 hits have already been made as of noon Sunday. Looks pretty popular to me!

200+ bids now, those are some tempting seeds in that collection,i wouldnt bid on them i have enough in my own collection, but for a new comer that could be the collection of dreams for the person willing to part with the cake. And theirs no doubt in my mind if they belong to Dwight their the real deal. Not siding either way on this,BUT we've (the giant pumpkin growers of America) and countries near and far have created a market for the highly sought after illusive unobtainable scale busting jaw dropping eyepopping megga seeds that he's listed to catch a growers eye! Yes G, DeWight did get the mystery package from the PGPGA a few years back, he was very nice and easy to deal with. I too feel the seeds he has are creditable, and it may look as if this is greed, but who is to say he isnt doing this to give to an organization along the way? Maybe the sale he makes on these seeds will go to some organizations, whether it be a pumpkin one, or charitable one. You cant judge the book by the cover, yes it looks like someone trying to recoup his investment, which DeWight definitely did over the years, and I for one, as a member of the PGPGA thank DeWight for his contributions and wish him the best.

The one item I want from DeWight is the cup of Checkon dirt he got as part of the mystery package! To me, that is much more valuable than any seed in that package.
Here is the website with DeWight personally picking up his package from the groups treasurer and keeper of the seeds, Marv Hicks, in the year 2000.

Dewight seems to be a very nice and helpful guy. He has the watermelon website and is a melon grower who will give out melon seeds and help all the growers he can who want to grow melons and cantaloupes. I think he was telling that he will not be growing pumpkins again because he has not had very good luck with pumpkins. Dewight has said he wants to devote all his time to melons and cantaloupes. I hope the best for Dewight and I would trust what he says about the pumpkins seeds. Like Glenn said there are some great seeds in the lot and someone will get them,, hard to resist for anyone that has the money to not get them and grow a big one off them. Good Luck to whoever gets them, I for one will not hold it against them, but I hope this does not become a trend in the future. It's already almost impossible for someone like me that lives in the Southern U.S. where we don't grow 1000 lbers every year to get the great seeds!!

I agree with Drew, he should have donated them back to a club. I think what he is doing is wrong. I'm sure he didn't ask the Dills for permission. I know it's not illegal to sell seeds any more, but I still think it is wrong for anyone but clubs to sell seeds.

It says high bidder ID is private, seems to may that says it's a grower. The 723 alone can fetch 600 at an online auction, I saw it get 575 last year. After 2004 anything's possible for the 723. I wouldn't bid, but it IS perfectly legal. Alex.

Dito Gad´s. That ebay guy claims he paid for some of the seeds when they were auctioned. Should be easy to verify where and when these deals were made. Why should he donate them back to the clubs now, will they pay something back to him? If you would stop growing AG´s for whatever reason and have a good stock of seeds you once paid a couple hundred bucks for, would you give them back for free? I think - in general - our hobby and the seeds should not end up like some Wallstreet business only because it´s allowed to sell them now, but when I gave up my last hobby (vintage cars) I sold every car and all the parts to get back some of the money I had invested in the years before. Sounds like a pretty normal way to go IMHO.

Yeah, it's me. DeWight Blanton here. Let me first start by saying THANKS to those who have a life and didn't slam me over this, there might be 4 or 5 left.. and also a BIG THANKS for those who have stuck up for me, even those who stuck up for me just a little. I'll start at the top of the posts and respond to those I feel are worth responding to and I'll go quickly... First, all the seeds are 100% genuine, I went over this on the e-bay site which I am sure all of you have seen and most have it saved in thier favorites. For Marc, well you are just an idiot!! And have no idea what kind of person I am Mr.D&ME, you need to pay attention to what you are reading. The "quack" comment was from me in a response to a quack. Oh, another one from Marc, what is your comment about feedback and literature supposed to mean? Or do you even know?? There ain't no front man, these are my seeds. Yes this is a private auction so you guys don't slam the winner when it's over, just because they have better seeds than you. Thanks for pointing me out Glenn, but I was going to respond regardless. By the way my address is 4062 E. SR 356 in Scottsburg Indiana also, incase some of you wussies that are chicken to post thier names here and when you send me e-mails privately would like to stop by.

Yeah, I grow big watermelons,Indiana record at 232 lbs, second in GPC that year. 2004 Second overall biggest alltime in Indiana, winner at IPGA at 196 lbs. third in GPC this year. Also one at 182 and 170(my Fiance's) first and second at IPGA in 2003. Not to mention several more around 150 lbs. Now you know, and yeah I own the big watermelon site on yahoo. Yes this is a very nice package of seeds, would be good for a beginner or to add to a collection. Hey Rock, Maybe I'll put the dirt up for auction next :) Yes I paid good money for that seed packet back in 2000, those are in there too. You are welcome for my contributions to PGPGA also. In closing I will say this, I feel I am doing no wrong, I am just selling what I aquired in giant pumpkin seeds in a few year period. They didn't work for me in my climate, belive me I wanted them too, just didn't happen. So should I just sit on these seeds till they all go bad? I paid over $600 for this collection not to mention the time involved, I am not going to give them away. Would any of you give me something you paid over $600 for? I think not. I have gave away HUNDREDS, maybe even thousands of seeds to growers, I GAVE them to them, if they wish to sell them, who cares, they are thiers to sell if they wish. That's all.............

DeWight as the primary post said this was bound to happen sooner or later. I am finding a hard time getting excited over the seed sale. Someone had to be first and I guess that guy is you. The business of seed selling has only just begun and clubs have been selling them openly for awhile now, just calling them auctions. I believe all of our collections will be worth something to each of us soon. The hobby of seed collection is turning into what similar collections of baseball cards once were. Most people gasp at the price of some of the top seeds. But the true reality is what the market will bear. We have seen many seeds sell at auction for high prices. I believe it is a simple progression of the hobby due in part to increasing popularity of growing the AGP. The hypnotic nature of them is what is attracting the high prices too. The general population is extremely interested in them come weigh off time. This interest is also helping to raise prize money at sities around the world. The practice of selling seeds for profit is something many growers already do. We may all have join the band wagon some day or it may completely split up the growers into the haves and have nots. With the price this morning up to $887.80 now. I say Good Luck to you and Good Growing. If that is what it costs for good seeds let the buyer beware and grow pumpkin grow. I intend to still offer free seed to those who ask in hope to further promote what I consider to be my national pastime.

I advocate the giving of seed for FREE. I'm not a heavyhitter by any stretch of the imagination, but like most of you, I've given away, and will always do so, plenty of seeds to those who'd like them. BUT, if someone wants to sell, who are we to cast a stone or bad remark? There are always going to be different views on this subject, and I think we should respect them all, even if we do not agree. And in case most of you haven't paid attention, or have conviently turned a blind eye..but, seed selling has been going on for years, just behind closed doors..so to speak. What about those who send $20 to a HH as a "donation"? (I've done it) How about the deals that go thru via e-mail, or at seminars? (I've done it) I hear negative comments when it's someone who does it on E-Bay, but never a word when someone does it at Niagara off to the side, or thru e-mail deals? It happens all the time...always has, always will. Supply and demand. Please, be realistic before you speak in a condenscending way towards another about the issue. (PS...I just bought a 1260 Weir for $65. Who among you wouldn't have done the same, hmmmm?)

I was taught a few years ago that the best way to get hot seeds is to be friendly, ask politely, grow the seed (do not ask for a hot seed only to hoard or trade) and return the generosity shown when you can.
Paul said it, too many friends and great seeds out there. Auctions that appear on this site are a great way to support our pumpkin growing community. I decided this year I would support the APGA club and actively bid during their auction. I was quite lucky in that I outbid all for a 582 hester, 1446 eaton and a 1420 larue. The club benifited and so did a few of my friends. The 582 has already been given away. I have also given a 977 away this year, and a 805 among other very good seeds. I just happen to know someone in the south that collects world record seeds, guess who is getting a xmas present this year? Giving away seeds and supporting our clubs are probably two of the best investments I have ever made. Down the road someday I might make a post that I am hunting for a 1500 Andrews 05, there were only 25 seeds in that pumpkin and they all have gone 25% heavy and those out there that I consider friends might just remember me.
Sell em, buy em or eat em. It is your conscience and your life. If you are happy, then it don't matter what everyone else thinks.
