I would like your opinions on this subject. If you could save only one pumpkin from your patch would it be the 1000Lbs+ blob or lets say a 3-400lb perfectly round/orange pumpkin. I do understand that some/most are looking for huge weights and appearance isn't that important to them. I would choose the perfect pumpkin but that is just me. In my opinion very few pumpkins that are huge are nice to look at but it makes sense because of the amount of stress that is put on the belly of the pumpkin. I respect everyones opinion and this post was not made to piss off anyone.

There's a lot of nice shaped, orange 700+ pounders on the grower diaries here.

I agree with your comment Yomomma. Take Mark Muller on this site. He has some of the nicest looking big pumpkins I have ever seen. His 650muller this year was awesome. I would not complain if I grew one ever year like that.

Depends on your goals. Do you want a world record, or do you want perfect 500 lber's to sell at market. Both have their merits.

I go along with Shannon...This ain't no beauty contest...Now have a beauty that is round and orange...nobody's gonna argue that...AG grower's and the general public will disagree forever...but the general public won't buy one over 60 lbs anyway...I've seen some beautiful dragon heads come from that ugly big pumpkin!!! cull a 1000 lber to keep a nice shape 700 lber is a sin against the GPC..LOL..anyway...Grow em Big!!!..er...oh should I say beautiful...whatever makes YOU happy! that's the key!

Shannon, I find that comment a little surprising coming from you(I mean that respectfully, with no offense intended). I thought you liked your pumpkins on the orange side:-)
Jeff, A good question. I've been thinking of posting one similar to it. For putting out in the front yard, I'd definitely favor a round, orange(preferrably large and shiny) one. At weighoff, my focus would be more on weight. Although, it seems that children are more drawn to the nice looking ones(maybe I'm wrong). I actually I think I favor shape, over color. I'd rather have a nice tall, round one, with not much color, over a bright orange, flat blob(wheel's are kind of cool though). All in all, I favor nice shape and color. If I grew a state or world record, I wouldn't mind much, if it was ugly. I agree, that the 650 Muller is a beauty. That one in Moro's diary(719, I think) has great color ane shape as well.

For some growers there are other characteristics of importance besides the weight. I'd rather have a round and beautiful orange pumpkin than one of those "big heavy blobs that look like cowpies" (Vince Zunino) that might be a few pounds heavier. This year I had a very orange and beautiful pumpkin off the 801.5 Stelts that weighed 495lbs. I loved it considerably more than my 658lbs German record pumpkin from 2002 that was one of those ugly, white wheel shaped ones. I'm growing AGs for the fun of it and so I grow whatever gives me the greatest pleasure, the beautiful orange ones.

Randy and Deb's pumpkins were very big and very orange, really awesome! I think that’s what we’d all like to shoot for. Every year, when I choose my seeds to plant, I try to pick out half for weight and half for color. This year, an “orange one” ended up my heaviest. Maybe the orange ones of the world are starting to catch up with the big heavy ones. In the meantime, please send home all those nasty 805's that only grow ugly looking stuff and I'll see to it that they have a proper burial:-)

Great example from Joe. We grew the 805P & the 842E this year striving for either or both. In the perfect world I'd want my giant orange cake & eat it big & heavy too. Yet if I had to choose, I'd take big & heavy over color.

pumpkins are orange? for resale / barter purposes, or carving everyone is drawn to orange.. my best carvers were 400lbs. anythinng bigger requires personal delivery! of course my goal is still to achieve 1000lb....or even 800? JACKS 1204 was orange! so was PAULS at somepoint one picks the plant or plannts in their garden to go BALLSOUT on , all for ONE! If a plant lags behind i thinnk about CARVERS, and GENETICS! DBH

It can be white, yellow, orange or red as long as I'm not in the "kiddie patch" next year.

Pumpkins are like waves... the BIG BIG waves are rarely beautiful, and the beautiful ones are rarely big. I used to only surf the small to mid-sized beautiful waves, but one day I caught a monster (15' in the face of the wave) and I have been enchanted ever since.
I am currently only interested in beautiful pumpkins, but someday I'll probably grow something over 1000. I am sure the rest will be history.

The big one ones are the ones that pay at the fairs, sometimes you get lucky and it's big, orange, and good looking, it can happen!
