Ya'll keep talking about a product called "captain" is this the kind of product or is it the brand name and where might I buy some? I am new at this and I guess some of my questions seem a little silly . But giant pumpkin growers are far and few between around here so there aren't too many people to ask. I have already gotten a wealth of info and also a few belly chuckles from this sight.

Captain is a fungicide. Fungicides are used to control diseases. There is many types of fungicides you can by most fungicides at your local gardenings center. I use benalate it seems to work. Hope this was helpful. mark, good luck!

In case you want to do research, the proper spelling of the chemical itself is CAPTAN, if you do searches on the other spelling you will get plenty of responses about boats, planes etc... Just wanted to make sure.... ;) Here is the basic data on it's uses....

/FUNGICIDE USED TO CONTROL: CONTROLS SCAB, BLACK ROT, BOTRYTIS, SOOTY BLOTCH, FLY SPECK, & SUMMER ROTS ON APPLES; BROWN ROT & LEAF SPOTS ON STONE FRUITS & ALMONDS; DEAD ARM, DOWNY MILDEW, & BLACK ROT ON GRAPES. CONTROLS A WIDE VARIETY OF FUNGUS DISEASES ON SMALL FRUITS, BERRIES, ORNAMENTALS & VEGETABLES. SEED TREATMENT BY SLURRY, DRY TREATMENT, AND PLANT-BOX APPLICATION. Household uses include: application to fruit, vegetable and ornamental gardens, house plants and lawns, in paints (oil based), on surfaces (awnings, blankets, boats, closets, clothing, draperies, floors, leather goods, luggage, mattresses, rugs, shoes, storage rooms, upholstery, walls, workshops), and on other articles. Industrial uses include incorporation into lacquers, paints (oil based), paper, paste (wallpaper flour), plasticizers, polyethylene, rubber stabilizer, textiles, vinyl, and vinyl resins. /FORMER USE: APPLICATIONS (VET): AS BACTERIOSTAT & FUNGICIDE Although captan has reportedly been used as a plant regulator on citrus fruit, no evidence was found that it is currently used for this purpose in the USA.

Although captan can sometimes be difficult to find (i went out of state to get it) it is a common ingredient in some of the "shotgun formulas" found in vegetable dust, rose dust, etc. They usually contain a fungiside (captan) and a couple of insecticides....the squeezy bottles are good for general dusting of the fruit. The bottoms usually open up and you can pour out a bit and make a paste ....a little insecticide with the fungiside is a good idea in my opinion.

Thanks all, It is nice to be able to ask all the "dumb questions" you want and still get good answers.

Don't forget Captan is extremely nasty stuff. It has been proved to cause cancer and even says so on the bag! Always use rubber gloves, watch the wind so the powder does not blow in your face. When making a paste add water very slowly, it doesn't take much.
