What prevents you from being the first grower to hit the 1500# mark? Excluding If you live in the extreme south and north, extreme weather conditions, a neighbors tree shading your patch, not motivated to weed, water, prune or fertilize ect. ect.. Grant it, some growers seem to have their patches in ideal places. But there has been growers from coast to coast and other continents that has grown some monsters. What are the common denominators that make a Heavy Hitter? As the Red Sox said this year,” Why not us?”

Let's see....It took the Sox nearly 90 years to pull it off, so in 90 years I'll grow a 1500 pounder.

Bears, being a Chicago Cubs Fan and all I think that is 2 strikes against me. I think different era's and different area's have their own Heavy Hitters. I think the words Heavy Hitter has been a label that is been overly used. To use your baseball terms Heavy Hitter = Hall of Famer. A five year veteran is not a heavy hitter, but an allstar he may be. I am a realist and 1500 is a far stretch for me but going for a state record is my goal, but their is an old saying A blind squirrel finds a acorn once in a while. Lots of luck involved in this sport me thinks..... Some times ya got it, other times ya don't. I'm a Bortner, if it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.

I agree.....up until 2003 our personal best was 818.8#..then we finally bumped into that 4 digit range with a 1028 in 2003. And then this year we lost one and it went 1432. THERE if that isn't enough proof that IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU then I don;t know what else to say.WEATHER played a HUGE roll in it for us.I firmly believe that. You have to trust what your doing and pray for some luck when it comes to the rain and th ewinds and the temps. If everything falls into place WALA!!! IT most certainly can happen to you DAN

Three out of four offending trees were mine. Only one remains but it's dying slowly of old age (Silver Maple)........
The "Lawn Care" neighbor is aware that I now control his weeds exclusively........
The old insect & fungus enemies that I know we have effective battle plans for.......
The newest area disease enemy (Angular Leaf Spot hit 6 miles from here in '04) will be prevented at all cost.......
Drought hasn't visited us in 3 years now. But we'll be irrigation prepared as we always are........
The soil is dialed.......
Genetics are........genetics.
If I haven't missed anything then......why not? If I remain observant & on my game the rest is in God's hands.

To be honest, I don´t think my soil would be ready for that. Takes a couple of years to build up 1500 soil conditions, right? However that´s what we could learn here on BP.com in 2004. Apart from that, I´m not living in Iowa or any of these potential places :)

I saw a interview with DA COACH, Mike Ditka a couple of weeks ago. The Interviewer asked him about the arrogance in making the SUPER BOWL SHUFFLE only half way into the season. Ditka's response was "show me a team that does't think they are going to win the SB and I'll show you a team that wont.

I think there is nothing holding me back know I think the main thing holding me back in the past was there wasn't a cross that could hold up to my style of growing know after understanding what makes for a pumpkin that can hold up to the push now after making the perfect cross i feel there is nothing holding me back fro breaking 1500 with a pumpkin and 1200 with a squash, I have a few seeds that are available of the super crosses I made this season if anyone is interested. There is always room for more than one grower to break 1500 lbs. mark

844x735 1097.5x735 1027x1097.5 1097.5xself 735x self pushing pumpkins can be done in many ways chop up your pumpkins from this year and add them to patch then cover them with leaves the hole patch 2-3 feet of leaves should be enough then come dec. cover hole patch with 3-6 inches of fresh cowmanure do not work manure in to soil untill march. This winter find a buddy that burns wood maybe to if you don't burn wood yourself apply as much wood ash over the top of you hole patch i also add 200 lbs of lime in the spring to be safe. know you have a good start for the big push,a folar feeding program should be used remember what ever folar feeding progrom is used consistance is the key small pushes everyday instead of one big push a week this is the key to your success...mark
