.....especially if one has a nosey & troublesome house cat. I worked in the office today. My office is in my home. For a couple hours this morning I heard a cat chasing some fun object around the kitchen floor. A few minutes ago I was pacing around with my cordless getting chewed out over a late shipping order......CRUNCH......I look down......AG pumpkin seed. Good thing it was one of my own numbered seeds & not one of the many auction seeds that are starting to take over my office!

I number each and every seed as soon as I get it - it's a good idea indeed!
It's funny that you mentioned it right now as I just finished numbering over 40 different seeds that I got during the past week a few seconds ago.
However, this means that I have to open the packs.... no problem for me but trade partners need to trust me - but again, no problem so far...

I think it´s a lot of work to number each seed. I would not number each one of average seed. If they are in a jar or a bag they are safe. But I think it is recommend to number outstanding seed, but not only with weightnumber but also consecutively numbered. As far as I know Brett make that with each of his seeds. Good to make a list who get what number of seed. For whatever it could be worth.

I number our own line bred seeds that are to few to satisfy the requests. The rest go out unbranded...

The Numbering of every Seed by the Grower of the Pumpkin/squash is a great idea. Growers can log who has been sent what number Seed/s have been sent out to whome and where. This information is like tagging cattle, the Seed can be traced to it's original recipient etc etc. With some Seeds demanding many 100's of $'s per seed it is even more vital. But, as Martin quite rightfully says it is a matter of trust. Just my #000 worth

With the amount of Pumpkins and Squash we had this year. I am always concerned that while they are drying that the controlled genetics could be comprimised. So this year after the seeds were rinsed, they were soaked in a dye solution for a brief period. I am glad I did this. Because Aprils Squash and a 808 Beachy x 231 Engel cross had the experience of two young girls and a dodge ball game. The green seeds were easily found and seperated back out. Which saved myself a lot of hair pulling, and one little girl who had no concept why the ball hitting the seeds was an issue. I don't know how you guys like Beachy dry and separate all these seeds and still have a life.

It´s a good idea do get yourself a serial generator like this one, it´s free: http://www.atory.com/Password_Generator/ so you get individual stuff like "f9qu" to mark your seeds. Take a permanent marker, write the pkin type on the front side of the seed and the serial on the back and feed the results to an excel chart, with some space to write down to whom the seed was sent. Sounds like work but there´s not much else to do in winter anyway :) Most of us want to track what we get or send so it will pay off over the years.

Ingo,
What's the advantage of your "code-method" compared to just numbering the seeds like e.g. Brett is doing it?

I don´t like simple numbering because it´s easy to fake and - concerning Excel charts - difficult to overview. You don´t get 1,2,3 in a row, you need 001, 002 etc. So, as for anything else, reliable serials or passwords do never contain of simple numbering. Excuse me for sounding like the safety instructor :) Just what you learn in a computerized world.
