What do you know ...about what??? That is exacly my question!

Everyone has a special talent/ skill./ area of expertise which is pumpkin related or non pumpkin related. Maybe you know someone with a wealth of
knowledge that should be recognized who you'd call if you needed to know something specific. Don't be modest now... if I needed to call somebody
who is specialized in a specific thing, it would be nice to know I could call YOU! I consider everyone in B.P.'s as family, hell. we even argue like
siblings at times! I have talked to a lot of great people over the years, and I have yet to find a grower who'd do me wrong. So, with that in mind....
If I needed to know something, what could I call you for that your fairly knowledgable about? I know a lot of people on the list, but really have no clue
what they do, other than grow! I find out that each grower is a weatlh of info about specific pumpkin info... experiencing splitters/ fighting wind/
combating disease/ growing in a short season/ growing by the ocean/ growing in a desert/ you get the picture.... OK... I'd say you could call me
if you ever need to dicuss the following...

Growing at a high elevation
Growing in a severe weather area
Short season growing tricks
Genetics/ breeding theories
Pumpkin History
Pumpkin propagation techniques
setting up satellite patches...ANYWHERE
Sandy soil observations and practices

Making your spouse mad techniques
Mowing & lawn care techniques
Thrash/speed/ death/ grindcore/ old school trivia
Tampa Bay Buccaneer trivia
Thrift store procedures and operations

Ok.. your turn...

Marc, thanks for the offer of sharing your knowledge to help other growers. I am sure it is appreciated. I am certainly interested in your short season tricks.

I do not have any expert growing knowledge that can help our community, but I can offer the following. I have access to USPS mail in Germany, as well as the local German Postal system. If anyone is having troubles getting bubbles back and forth from Europe/Germany to the U.S. then I would be willing to help.

I'm too new to AG growing to be much help there, but I have been gardening for years. I know about composting in several forms including hot pile, cold pile, windrow, and vermiculture. My other hobby is building and overclocking high performance computers. This type of computer is primarily used for extensive video editing and high end gaming. I am experienced in air cooling, watercooling, chilled water cooling, and phase change cooling. So if you want to try your hand at overclocking, modding, etc, or just want to build a good quality, low cost rig for normal day to day use let me know.

Cool thread madman. When it comes to AG's, I love the physiology behind the plants. How and why do they grow?

My day job involves testing brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) in people experiencing problems like insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, depression, autism, ADD, and just about everything else. Our company makes supplements designed to address the neurotransmitter imbalances associated with the problems listed above. If you, a family member, or friend does not like prescription medications like anti-depressents, etc, we offer alternatives for you.

Lets see, I am a chemical Technologist, I can provide info about paints, sealants, meatals and metal treatments etc. and if anyone has problems with their planes I can probably provide assistance there, or at least have connections to get you help. On the AG side, I am working on growing in a semi harsh climate, shortened season, much like Marc.
Our elevation here is 3800 ft. My goal is to grow 1000 pounds in the next 2 years, funny thing is I thought a good seed and reading the message boards on BP would do it for me. You have to work at these things just as hard, if not harder than the time and effort you put into your work.

On the work side. I am a Journeyman Carpenter and Specialize in Interior Finishing , doors, casings, hardware, entertainment centres, furniture. Cherry is my wood of choice.
Also own and run a small landscape company.
I also have been self employed for about 17 years, and employ 25 tradesmen.

I like these posts... sometimes I wish this site had a
profile page for each user, where we each could place a bio
and a photo.

I am a semiconductor engineer. I know how to test your memory.

Hobbies include photography... sometimes I even do weddings or
special projects for friends. I have spent 30 years in
photography and I'm only 39.

That, and more importantly, my wife and 5 kids limit my
time in the patch. But this giant pumpkin thing has really
turned into a passion.

My other hobbies include wood carvings, on the smaller
size, from 3" blocks of basswood up to 8" blocks.
Buddhas, ancient olmec statues, santa clauses,
and my favorite is my carving called "Its a World of
S--t, So Eat Up". Its a dung beatle on a dung ball,
two toned stained, and nice details. you can see through
the areas where the thin legs attach to the dung ball.

the inspiration came from a pissy whiney mood i was in
and turned on discovery to watch the dung beatles eat
elephant dung all day----and i don't see them complaining.

it sits on my fireplace mantle as a reminder that as
bad as it gets, it is never all that bad considering.

my other hobbies include beer, football, college basketball---this year's pick to click to win it all is Arizona.
remember the name Mustafa Shakur come march madness.
Texas Hold Em is my favorite game, and I work for an
engineering firm as a quality control inspector for large construction projects like the Joliet Speedway nascar track and Rt 66 dragstrip.

Hey Rock,

As an ambassador I wonder if you could put in a word,... the
new touch-screen machines in the Post Office lobby... they
tell you the amount to affix to your SASBP... then after a
few days (or NINE DAYS!!!) the USPS kindly sends it back to
you and asks you to affix another 12 cents. Something about
the automated handling equipment can deal with a standard
SASBP, thus a requirement for another 12 cents. (Twelve cents!)

Beware the touch-screen machines that don't tell you all you
need to know.

OK, I'll stop now........ ;-)

Hmmmmm..
I have not quite figured out what I do yet. Everytime I get confident in what I am doing they move me to a different area. I know how to build SemiConductors in multilayer packages and Flexible Circuits using organic substrates. Then I know how to electronically test them. Now in my new position I get to break what we build. They call it a Reliabity Technician. I still somedays just wish I had a clue what I am doing. For some reason the Engineer that interviewed me was amazed by my US Navy experience in Anti-Submarine Warfare. Then some how he thought electronics would be an easy fit.
I also am one heck of a cook, or atleast thats what people tell me. They keep coming back atleast.

I've been trying to figure out why pumpkins don't grow in MD... I also write song lyrics, play guitar, and am starting to modify guitars too. I'm currently working on a musical project with a friend and we're hoping to get some more people together so we can play shows. I've also read a bit about political theory... mainly Locke and Marx.

I have my own company that does computer related consulting, software development, and website design (http://www.wickless.com)

I make really good spicy dill pickles. Unfortunately had a bad cuke crop this year to go with my bad pumpkin crop.

I used to have other hobbies, I think, but I can't remember what they were.

I should add that my degree is not in computers, but in political science, and before I started my business, I used to run political campaigns. I ran Perot's '92 campaign in Nebraska.

I know that I do like this pumpkin hobby. I love baseball it's my second main summer interest. My girls teams have won the provincial championships and I have coached a few minor league ballplayers. The Detroit Tigers on Fox sportsnet are heavily watched in the kahuna's house...

What I do? I work with a large group of Preventative Maintenance Technicians in Canada's largest theme park. I get to play with big train sets. Like TOP GUN and TOMB RAIDER....

I also was not going to post but it seems to be a community thing so here goes nothing..
Professionally I am a Simulation and Analysis Designer designing navy ships. We do 3D modeling to demonstrate systems and aid the navy, crew and contractor in visualizing design.
Outside of work, I have been a ham radio operator for 25 yrs. and did the emergency management thing for many years, although I don't get on much anymore. I have been building, tinkering with and fixing computers since there have been computers, evil things that they are. I fish and next to pumpkins, my favorite thing is deer hunting. I have 3 boys, 1 is 15 and twins are 12. About 80% of my time from March to November when not at work goes into the pumpkins. The family is very supportive of our goal of growing the first 1000+ in Maine. Our ultimate goal is to kick my buddy Al Berard's hinney and become the Maine State record holder..
I own you in '05 Berard.....lol

You only have to hit me once before I block a punch! lol.. If I have a bubble come back 12 cents short every time, I would put 12 cents more on it the second time! lol.. Easy rule of thumb for bubbles is just put 2 37 cent stamps on it and you are done with it, anything over the 60 cent base for a sasbp is covered in 2 simple stamps!

The new machines in the Post office are just that, new. Yes there is issues, but they are awesome, and will shine in the next month as hoards of people get in line to mail. One word of advice, if you hate the lines at the Post office, go to USPS.com and check out the new click and ship service as well as the carrier pickup service. You can buy, print, and mail all you packages from home and never leave the house.. Postage is printed on your computer, you can tell the Post office where to pick up the package (I.E. back porch), and a carrier will come and pick it up! Works for all of your packages this holiday season!

I'm with Gordon... GO UTES!

Well, yes, but it's more efficient to know about the special
12 cent rule ahead of time. I get one returned about every
day right now.

Yesterday, one sent to me actually went through, with a note
that said, paraphrasing: "We actually delivered this one out
of the goodness of our hearts, now go find 12 cents and put it
in this little envelope. No stamps please."

I went and found 12 pennies and put it in the envelope...

well, as usual, late to the party, here comes pumpkinpal2.
i work in the "reproduction" (yeah, that caught my eye when i saw the ad in the paper for the job!) room of a MAJOR environmental engineering company in Syracuse, NY. you know, we have a big Xerox copier, a color copier, punching and binding machine, etc....i make books, i copy books. and everything in-between and beyond. similar to a Kinko's but the customers are all my co-workers. dozens of dozens!
i have been there (well, here, lol!) for 9-1/2 years or thereabouts. so if you were to need copies made, and worked where i do, you would consult ME, or my other two associates.
ahem, my other interests/knowledge peaks of interest:

i have been playing guitar since i was about 15.
no formal training really but good at it for what i've put into it, self-taught, and i have 30 musical originals, with the necesssary other instruments, all what i would call "real hard rock" instrumentals, and just for fun i could point some of you to where to hear a couple.
maybe one of you is a record producer? that'd be neat!

anyway, i always do my own brakes on my cars, have a well-rounded knowledge of growing AGs--yes, i did read the books-----(but let's see some results, hmmmm?)
and what else....gee i am pretttty boring!

and i am very mechanically inclined---oh yeah! i love to go to a top-fuel drag race and an air show! power, power power!

I am a retired DOLLOLOGIST....one who studies, collects, restores and teaches others, to restore, true antique dolls from 1920 to 1600. Retired is the key word. :)

Have just completed my second year, of field research, leading, to the honored term, of PUMPKINOLOGIST. Thus far I have about a 2.5 average....but things are looking up. One of my first year growers rolled out an 845 while a sixteen year old gal produced one over 500 which 'aint to bad for openers in either case. New grower success is my only 4.0 mark. :)
