This is my first year as an official hibernating pumpkin grower, and this will also be my first viewing of an online seed auction. I've heard rumors that prices can get really ridiculous in these, and I can't really blame anyone for that. Have you seen to seeds that are being offered up? I'm just wondering why nobody else was commenting about the auction? Were you hoping nobody else would notice when the auction was in hopes you might pick up some of those seeds without tapping into the kids college fund?

From what I understand, bidding takes place in chat "auction"

I've noticed that the "later" seed auctions very often produce better deals. If money is no object, go for what you desire!

For some of the new folks, here's how it works..
The seed auctions work like any other auction. The auctioneer will call up each lot, one at a time and start the bidding. With a little prodding and prompting, the bidding goes until the autioneer deems the bidding done at which time the seed is sold to the high bidder. The bidder gives his name and info to the autioneer or assistant and when they receive the cash, the bidder receives his seed.
Keep in mind that although sometimes the price of a seed may seem very high, these groups and organizations holding the autions use the funds raised to hold weigh offs and other AG events throughout the year. It's a good cause and a good chance to see some growers in the BP chat that you might not expect to see..i.e... some of the big guns show up for these auctions that you won't see any other time.
Keep in mind, it is generally frowned upon to chit-chat in the room while an auction is going on. If you decide to go into the auction room, sit quietly and watch unless your bidding. Idle chatter slows down the auction and could get you in a bad way in front of some 75 BP'ers.

A good auctioneer will set a time limit between calls. This is especially important when a large number of lots are up for grabs.

Idle chatter is absolutely forbidden unless someone has a constructive comment about a seed. But it would be wise to contact the auctioneer ahead of time (before the auction date) & qualify that what you have to say hasn't already been typed into the seed list description. Auctions can be very stressful for the organizer & the people who are serious about bidding. Don't make it worse for them by wasting space & time.

Winners are expected to email a pre-determined contact person immediately at the close of a lot. They are required to provide their real name (as opposed to a screen name) mailing address & telephone number(s).

They are provided a location to send their Postal Money Order or personal check.

It is good practice to send payment within several days of the auction close.
