I have tradionally assumed that over chart pumpkins were thicker pumpkins. I am now wondering if density plays a role. Does all AG have the same density? What are your observations?

very definitely NOT. Some cut like turnips...others like soft ice cream.......G

One of my preferred subjects. Because I haven't a clue. But the idea speaks to my desire to perform either X-Ray or Ultrasound testing on fruit in the patch. Especially on the blossom end after a year like this one.

I've noticed like marbeled walls in some of my pumpkins. The marbling is from calcium. This gives some really dense walls. Calcium is good. :)

i do the sculpting of the pumpkins (learned from the grumpkins guy), and i can tell you from our experiences, there are definately different flesh "densities". i'm not necessarily saying that some are rocks, and some are styrofoam, only that there are noticible differences in how easily the flesh strips off using our little tools. the nice traditional red stelts/mombert can cut like butter and make for some very easy carving sometimes, while the white, cantelouped ones can take a beating with a baseball bat and not show it. just our observations.

When I was carving my pumpkins this year I noticed a difference in the two types. I carved a very round, smooth and deep orange 75lbs AG, and a Football shaped yellow 90lbs AG. The 75lbs was absolutly solid and had thick tough flesh and I was only able to carve a crappy classic Pumpkin face on it. The 90lbs was very heavy to lift but had soft juicy flesh and was very easy to carve. I put a flame design on it. The big difference between each other pumpkin was the 75lbs was done and sat on the vine till the plant died and was very mature a very deep dark orange, the yellow 90lbs just got in to finish for the frost but I don't think it fully matured. Two other yellow football shaped pumpkins that were on a different plant but in the same patch were the same soft moist and easy to carve. My Biggest one 137 lbs was right by the round 75lbs and was very thick and tough. It too was a round kind of fruit but a little lumpy and was very mature a deep orange to pink color. I think that the nutrients or soil type can effect the toughness of the skin, color, and shape. Because all the ones grown by the 90lbs were like the 90lbs and all the ones grown by the 137 lbs were the same.
