Several months ago I posted that I stake my vines with stakes made from "OLD" Cedar shingles or shakes. The word "OLD" is important. I get them out of Dumpsters when I see a house is being renovated on the outside. Cedar shingles and shakes used to be made from CLEAR Cedar. DO NOT go to a Building Supply store and buy todays Cedar Shingles and try to make stakes. I heard from a grower who did that and he E-mailed me that they wouldn"t split because they were full of knots. I have not seen shingles in a Building Supply store for many years that would be satisfactory to split into stakes.
