My neighbors gave me 4 cubes of styrofoam (2'by3'by4') that was holding up their dock. It will break down to bb size pellets. I don't think it's toxic because over the years plants have established good root systems in the blocks. My question is, does anybody think this will be a good amendment to my soil? I figure it will be as good as perlite. Believe me, there is a lot of it. I don't want to bust it all up and till it under until I can get some solid evidence that this will work. Thanks Pappy

Obviously no nutritional value, but it does help let air into the soil as well as reducing its tendency to compact when walked upon. This is important in "clayey" soils.

I think a bale of straw would be a lot better then that stuff. Sounds like LITTER to me.

and if you put that down it will NEVER go away. so if you dont like it, you're stuck, unless you haul all your soil out and bring in fresh.......at least organic matter decays

watch how much straw/hay you add it takes up to a year to break down and can tie up nitrogen so bad that adding more n only makes it worse i bought vermiculite and perlite from the local farmers co-op $5/bag 3cu.ft.bags just a thought i would agree with the responces you have got send the foam to the dump
