I have only a few seeds, and I've been very selective (actually I'm just being cheap, bubble packs and stamps get expensive if you start sending them out 20 at a time) in requesting seeds from the growers here, but I've noticed certain individuals have a large collection of seeds, and other individuals seem to have spent the last month trying to collect every seed possible. I can see having enough seeds to grow, and probably 20 or so additional seeds as backups, for trade etc. This is not including any of your own seeds. But I was wondering what everyone else had in terms of seed numbers, how many you usually grow, how many do you think is reasonable etc. I can't say this will help me or anyone else grow more and bigger pumpkins next year, I was just wondering.

Thats a very good question. In order to have good seeds every year, I think you need to send out 20-30 bubbles not only to people that grew big pumpkins, but to people that had "special" pumpkins, ones you saw in person or whatever. When i was first out, I was guilty of sending to many bubble packs. Now I trade with the same people every year. I sent out something like 30 requests last year, but ended up exchanging seeds with over 200 growers. Exchange with your friends, get local seeds that have produced. I would suggest contacting Dills, Hebbs, etc in your region. Regional seeds do better for people IN MY HUMBLE OPINION. Just look at what Jack LaRue accomplished this year.

To answer the question about how many seeds I have. I dont know, dont want to know, and dont want to guess. I could probably plant the entire county full of these blast things.

I have about 70 different seeds. I have a theory;

OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder)

I think OCD is status quo among us AG growers, whether good or bad.

ron and i have been collecting and trading seeds for over 10 years now

lord knows why we do it, we have good proven seeds of our own but theres something special about planting the same seed that grew a monster the previous year ( if it grew 8 or 10 then its all the more exciting to dream about the possibilities )
i still believe a seed grows best back in the soil and climate it was produced in however we will always plant one half proven ( ours and theirs ) but will also take a shot on any seed we think has a chance

I think collecting seeds is just part of the hobby, and if ya think they are going to be old to plant get rid of em if u aint never going to use em. Dont take em to your grave,lol

i have five, 1-gallon glass jars that are pretty much chock full of other growers' seed packets, and a sixth one has about 30 packets, bundled, in it from about 4 growers.
plus three.5 years' worth of my own seeds....
hmmm. i forgot i need to jar those ones from a couple of
seed giveaways---there could be some really nice ones in there from '03! my big project for winter is to get all of my seeds into an Excel file...then i'll be talkin! eric

Piles and piles of seeds from growers all over the world, yet come planting time never the "Hot" ones I want, and if I do have a hottie their usually so old they dont germinate well... I think I have become a hermit in my old age and find myself planting my own seeds and selfing them more, and more... Still come January I consider sending bubbles to my old pals for more, more, more.... Hay Tom B want to swap?
