What is the most likely cross that you will see alot of next season? And which seed do you think will produce the most 1000 pounders for next season.
Heres Mine,

1. Most likely Cross- 742 Eaton X 572 Bosworth
2. Most 1000 pound seed - 572 Bosworth

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL!

Ok, Ok, Ill quit playing around,

1.842 Eaton X Peterson/Carlson 1432 or 1097 Beachy
2. Im going with the 1097 Beachy or maybe a 572 Bosworth,

I think that a cross between the 1446 Eaton and the 1432 Peterson/Carlson would be good.

Any thing with a 898 Knauss should do good...just look at this years results!

(1446 x 1458) It certainly sounds good to cross (2) 1400+ seed but if you look at that particular matchup, it's really not an attractive cross...genetically speaking.
Most likely, the resulting progeny's shape, size/weight, and color will be all across the spectrum with very little consistency or predictability in outcomes.
Just my humble opinion anyway.

Look for crosses with a pollinator that produced a large, heavy OTC fruit....maybe some crosses with commonality (same seed) in either maternal or paternal genetics...crosses with the exact same genetic lineage on both sides...or stuff with proven, heavy OTC producing seed like the 898, 1260, 730, 767, 1038, 709.5, 1337/1058, 1097, 1178, 895.5*, 805, etc.
Avoid the random, cross with whatever-you-got and no-plan-in-mind crosses.

Hey SlyChit....Phil Hunt did an 842 X 1097 cross as well as a reverse cross. Your right, the gentics are there and they should in theory throw big. Both parents throw big and there is a very shallow gene pool there (845 and 723 Bobier are the same cross). I'm sure Phil would hook anybody up who wants some seeds. He uses the bigpumpkins handle Copper. A real nice guy too. I'm sure he'd be willing to trade.

hey you

Greencastle, PA

I'm probably going to try a 1019 Chambers x 1156 Larsen and 1230 Daletas x 951.4 Catellucci... I have a few other ideas too....

With all due respect, I think 99% of you could really benefit from a class (or book ) in plant genetics and breeding. I dont think you understand the implications of cross-pollination, or hybrid vigor, or a lot of the other buzzwords that seem to float through this forum. A little knowledge would go an incredibly long way here and I think it would really open your eyes and get you pointed in the right direction. Everyone seems to fixated on cross-pollination and in reality it should be fairly low on the list of things you should be considering at his point. There is an incredible seed base now consisting of just about any combination of seed/pollinators you can imagine. Work properly with what you have now and I think you will see much better results. Again, I am saying this constructively and with absolutely no malice.

I don´t think it is in the less of knowledge, it is the less of possibility. Or do you have a space to grow 100-200 AGplants in F2 generation to select the one you want continue to breed with?

The 2 crosses Glen Andrews made with the 935 Lloyd looks interesting.

818Andrews (735 Pukos x 935 Lloyd )

AG - I see your point and will have to agree with you to some extent. There are many growers out there that make wili nili crosses without fore thought.

One area where I am focusing my attention this off season is plant breeding.

Take a look for starters:

The mad man has some good thoughts on breeding. Take note on what he says too.

Matfox...940 Mombert 2000 is a good one to start with. Show me one that wasn't tall, round, and orange.
Your idea of the 1446 x 1458 sure won't do it....
