What usally causes a pumpkin to rot from the inside.

Beside from stop growing and sitting on a vine for a year or two. Is there a desease that causes this? Or is it lack of calcium or potassium? I have had a pumpkin rot from the inside with no holes visable anywhere on the outside.I just dont want this to happen again if i can help it. I started a calcium soak late when my pumkin was around 400 pounds.(kinda to late right?)

Somewhere there was a breach into the cavity & the pathogens that cause internal rot enetred through that breach.

Check the stem area closely a pin hole will breach the cavity....those little shallow looking cracks go right through..

Your right, never thought of that,I had little cracks at the stem that wasnt very big that I filled with captans. It first started getting soft about 10 inches right of the stem. Thanks!

Yanno, now that i think about it, I had to fill them little cracks twice, and thats about the time it stopped growing.

Would it be a good idea to use silicone when them cracks first start, Like maybe fill them with captains first then apply silicone? I would have used silicon if I noticed the cracks was getting bigger.Or is this something only god controls.

Once that seal is cracked. Then air is allowed in, the process of decomposition has started. Its Mother Nature that controls this :).
