Don't worry, I've been doing this for 2 years now, I've lost horribly twice (my personal best is now 178! LOL!), and I still have a ton of fun. Someday, when I start putting out competition weights, I will grow with the fear of losing a pumpkin to a split, but for now I just do it because its so dang fun!
Besides, do you know anybody in your city that grows 114 pound... "anythings?" You rule the town, man!

No worries this was my first year and my personal best is 136.6 lbs. I didn't even go to any competition other than to a near by Carrot Barn Scale and weigh it there with my cousin who has personal best 94 lbs. Just ask around for some seeds there are plenty of people that will give you hybrid or big ass weight seeds for FREE! and I paid 2.49 for no name brand. Also explore the web for info on how to grow a giant. Hundreds at this site can help and even other sites provide sensable beginners info.

Yup this was my first year as well, along with my fathers first year. He grew an 90 # off an Big Max, I grew both an 620 Boyton and 1178L Wentzell and my persional best is ONLY an 25.5 lber.. But My patch has majour issues with animals cuke beetles you name it..
Next year id be happy with an 200 Lber :-)
Its all for the fun i love growing them and have always. years before its always been store bought plants that grew like 30-40 lbers. now that ive actually worked my soil and know a bit more ya a 200 lber would be nice in 2005 :-)

I'm in my 4th year, and I've gotten up to about 450 lbs. My first year was about 100. I keep hoping any year now I'l figure all this out and get something really big, but for now, the 300 to 400 pound jack o lanterns look pretty darn good.

This was my first year also . Only wanted to beat the local favorite at our farm show and got a 246 lber with very little pumpkin knowledge. Made alot of good friends through this hobby. Looking forward to next year.
