I just posted some new pics cause I did a little pumpkin related work in the back yard this last weekend. The picture of the dirt in the front yard was taken early in the morning and by the time the last load was hauled up there was over 20 yds of dirt pile up in the street. So to make it real interesting the wife was gone all day Saturday while I did this. Just as I was bringing up the last load I saw her pull up to the house but she didn't stop, she just looked at the dirt and kept going, odd I says to myself. So I went back down the hill to the new bed and soon my wife is standing up above me on the deck. She surveys the yard, taking some time to take in how little grass is left after a bobcat drives over it for several hours and then she looks at the giant hole I just built with my own two hands and says "What where you thinking". I had a response that she didn't like very much (it had something to do with growing bigger pumpkins) cause the door got slammed. So....what should I have said? G...do you have an extra room at your house?

Join the club, Bassthumb! Even good wives will throw up their hands a least twice a year and say something to the effect, "Are you insane?"

Just getting the footings ready for your new kitchen!...Naw that wouldn't work...I always go with "semi-temporary insanity" and that I'll have it straigtened out in a year or so....Gone Nesbitt is always good too! Hang in there!LOL

My wife sees how happy I am when I'm picking weeds, digging dirt, pollinating flowers, and rowing (and growing) pumpkins. That alone is enough of a reason for her not to complain about the time I've spent in the backyard. My only problem now is how do I support her desire to grow gourds and field pumpkins without giving up any of my garden space?

In the past my spouse only said "You and your Pumpkins, You are nuts". This year I grew 3 big ones. We travel with all 3 Pumpkins to a Pumpkin-Fest nearby. I took 1st with my 237, Annette took 2d with 202 and Sara took 3rd with 165. The next place were 164 lbs. We all took prices worth of 50 $ and now the hole family is in Pumpkinfever (We could talk about all day long and noone is nuts) and.... we´ll try again next year.

those are some good stories from people who had the pumpkins enter their lives after their significant other. to the single ones out there - be careful! make sure she knows how important the pumpkins are. i got lucky enough to find a farm girl i get along with. when we buy a house, our pumpkin needs come first, then we look at the inside of the house!

Hmmm...there's room here, and for the first time pumpkin growers will actually outnumber the non-growers so that might be a good thing. Its a delicate balance we try to hit with this hobby....just like a fruit--a little too much push and she blows up..........G

Bassthumb I looked at your pictures and I think that you did a great job in leveling off that hillside. Good job! She'll get over it before this spring. LOL
What are you going to buid to hold the hill back from your garden? Railroad ties or blocks.

Bassthumb...Your hard work will pay off "big time"! The phrase, "There ain't no free lunch" also applies to the world of giant pumpkins. You're a man after my heart!

whenever i'm at home at the computer, my parents ask me if i'm "talking to the pumpkin-heads"
This thread is biased towards the women non-growers. ok MEN.... what do I do when I get married and my husband is complaining about the pumpkins?

Brigitte, You just have to marry a good man. ;-) Hang out at weighoffs...
Bassthumb, always remind her that this keeps you out of the bars...
Ah, last night I had a really wierd dream. I was young again (that was cool...) and still single and living at home. My family was moving to a new house, that had a tiny yard with several large pine trees growing right in middle of it. I was sick to my stomach, knowing that pumpkin growing would be impossible at this new location...
Then I woke up; I remembered that I have too way much garden space to use effectively, and rolled over and hugged my wonderful wife...

Ok.... she's over it now, just s little suprised at the amount of dirt in the street and how big the amphitheather in the back yard is (it's not huge, just 500 sq ft). She loves the pumpkins as much as anybody and she is a GREAT person that I should try to be more like in many ways. Linus is my hero- very wise words, i should have talked to you first! NSTransplant- I have already been asked what spot are you going to give up so i can grow "real pumpkins" ie pumpkins less than 5 lbs apiece. BOEHNKE- the kids love driving around with me when the pumpkin is in the back of the tacoma:) G - keep the room open just in case BRAD- probably blocks, will do that part this spring. Hopefuly there will be no salmon season so I can get some stuff done around the house! BRIGITTE - yep, you need to find a pumpkin dork who's as crazy about it as you. CLIFF- a hill is almost as bad as trees !!!!:)
