This growing season was a long and tedious one for myself, after loosing my first plants to corn seed magotts..then after replanting I had no males when the females were ready... AL Berard set me up with male flowers but all my first pollination aborted..finally on july 19 I was able to get a fruit to set on the Whittier 1186.4..This was during a spell of coastal fog that lasted three weeks..not to mention the rain, rain, rain that we had.The Powers 877.7 that i was also growing would not take a set and when it finally did the fruit split at about 300lbs..I had all but given up..Al called during the summer to see how things were going and gave some advice.."take your pumpkin to the fair even if you think it has no chance of winning".. one week before Topsfied I decided to take what I thought was a weak 650 to 700 pounder to the fair and am I glad I did since the foolish thing was heavy and went 903lbs..and to top it off my 903 won the heavist pumpkin from Maine award and placed 29th..what a fun day and I would not have gone if it wasn't for all the encouragement...THANK YOU for all your help AL!!after coming close to quitting I can truly say that I can't WAIT TO NEXT YEAR...lobsta

im very proud that you mentioned the " heaviest pumpkin from maine " award

my good buddy joe jutras cut the awards out on one of his machines ,and i painted and clear coated them

this award did just what it was intended to do

reward a person from each new england state that may not have otherwise received anything , yet they had the heaviest pumpkin from their state

of course mr. i won a hummer at the durham fair had to screw it all up and win the conn award ( some guys have all the luck )( allen also had the 50 th place pumpkin and also won $ 250.00 ( one tank full of gas for the hummer ?

Hey lobsta thanks for the kind words.....glad I was able to help out in any way I could plus getting to meet you in person. You had a long ride to Topsfield and back but I'm sure it was worth it. I'll be hitting you up for a seed trade next month so save me a couple.....I might need another good one to beat my buddy Billy Clark(stunner) AGAIN next year.

Congratulations John, nice to see somebody different at the top in Maine instead of the same old man every year....

We'll be talking soon.
