Hey all, last second I know, but I had lined up a pumpkin boat for this year's Pumpkin Regatta in Windsor after my dreams of growing my own fell through. Unfortunately, for reasons unknown, I believe the offer to provide me with a formidable yacht has fallen through. I do have a brand spanking new pumpkin lifting tarp now though, never used, but ready for next year I guess. If anyone within an hour or two of Windsor has a pumpkin suitable for the Regatta (450 pound plus) that they wouldn't mind parting with I'd be plenty willing to give the credit of growing the "boat" to the grower by putting your name on the pumpkin. Lots of TV coverage is planned for the event. Whether I hitch a ride for this year or not, I'll be there cheering on the other paddlers, and I have high hopes that I'll be there next year in my own home grown "yacht" thanks to everything I've learned this year from bp.com.

re: pumpkin boat...

how do you know which side to cut?
it seem to me that you would want to float it ... see which way it floats and use it that way ... but it would be a pain to do that? is there a easier way to figure out which part to cut ?

There's no easy way to figure out where to put the hole. I haven't competed before so my knowledge is limited, but g1t, I've emailed you an article that was written by somebody that competed last year, it should give you a little bit of info about how to pick where the hole goes and how the pumpkins handle on the water and such. As for trying to float it first, there's no easy way to manouver a 500 pound pumpkin, and I don't know if the guts would effect the way the pumpkin floats or not. Maybe I'll find out this weekend at the Regatta.

Jeff, thanks again for the offer, but I don't know if that pumpkin will hold up through the week without turning into a big ball of pumpkin mush, I'll check with you towards the end of the week. But...I'd be interested in a few seeds if you want to offer them up, next year I can grow a whole fleet of pumpkin boats, it'll be the first ever pumpkin boat squadron in the Windsor Pumpkin Regatta.
