Hi Everyone,
We have done much to help along our first giant pumpkin "Uncle Sam". We are having a sinking feeling though that there is an obstacle which we cannot overcome. You see, Uncle Sam is only 45" from the main stump. We know that pumpkins ideally should be out 10 - 15 feet, but we weren't planning on keeping this pumpkin. Only thing is, he's just so big - pol. on 7/4, 35" ott stem to blossom end. We have two others that were pollinated on 7/17 that look like they are taking off. What do you think? Is Uncle Sam doomed to self-destruct because there isn't enough vine? Should we cut him off now and concentrate on our others even though they will be coming along much later?
Thanks so much for all your help!

Hi kids! I would wait another week before removing any fruit. Measure the circumference of each pumpkin every other day and keep the fastest growers.By August 1, if you want to get a really big one, you should not have more than 1 or 2 fruits on vine. Keep one that is nice and smooth, and round with a long stem, and good positioning to vine, otherwise pumpkin will grow onto vine. I put sand under my pumpkins so it won't hit anything hard as it grows. You should also shade fruit from hot sun!Keep trimming tertiary vines to promote pumpkin growth. Good luck and have fun!
