To get from my backyard to the driveway, we've got to transport pumpkins up a significant slope. I had planned to use a pallet loader to move them up the hill, BUT, unfortunately, the prediction is for RAIN on Friday and Saturday.
Anybody got some good ideas for how to (safely) move pumpkins up a wet and rather muddy slope?

can you cover the slope with plastic or tarps ?
if not maybe you could strap the pumpkmin onto the pallet or sled of some kind and pull the pallet/sled up the slope with rope/cable/chain with some kind of hoist/wench/truck.

if you can get enough helpers, I would use straps as they use to carrie the pianos to lift and carrie the pallet.

Kubota tractor in 4 wheel drive. I've had to put in 4WD once already this year to get it out of the patch. Back end isn't quite as heavy with a pumpkin hanging off the bucket.

You might get a piece of plywood and drill a couple of holes in it to tie ropes to. Put the pumpkin on the plywood and drag. If it doesn't drag good enough on the ground you could lay some 2x4's about 2' apart and slide plywood on them.

Wow -- you guys are great (and creative)!
I'm thinking about covering the slope with giant plastic tarp Thursday night.
I'm gonna get me some big work lights -- if this project takes heroic effort, we don't want to work in the dark.
Pumpkin on a tarp sliding...padding so it doesn't get bunged up on the bottom...sleds....hmmm...
It measures over 350 inches total...gonna be tough to drag anything that size up hill. The winch thing might be necessary.
You've given me a lot to think about...Keep those creative ideas coming!
And, THANKS! -- Chris

4x4 truck in reverse so the load stays IN the box.

You could also grease the 2x4's and you would be surprised how easy it will slide. i watched some men slide a mobile home like this. they jacked it up and put plywood under the tires. they greased the plywood and slide the mobile home sideways really easy.

I have the same problem and will use a hand pallet truck. Several wooden boards need to be arranged so the truck won´t sink in the mud. A local store can loan out a truck for a couple of hours for sure. I used it last season and it worked ok.

Have contacted company with a long reach crane...might solve the problem.
Will still get plastic down tonight.
Sliding it up is the other option I am looking at. That Reynolds tarp gets super slick with some dish soap on it, and will slide easily over pink foam or plastic. May make a track out of the accordion folding pink foam and slide it up -- winch on tow truck may facilitate sliding if needed.
Kinda hoping the crane comes through, though. Would be cool -- so long as it doesn't go...splat!! (Hope that P&P strap thing works...my lifter from PGPGA never arrived :-()
Thanks again for everyones great ideas! I'll post how it turns out.
Still, I am praying against rain at all!!

Hey, Folks,
They are loaded in the trailers and ready for the weigh-off. Had my plastic down, and actually hired a long reach crane which took em over the house and set em down right in the trailers, pretty as can be.
The feared rain showers split and went around us! All praise to God! Thanks to all those "righteous men" who joined us in prayer. Check out James 5: 16 - 18.
The weigh-off will be anticlimactic after this!
