If you had 3 questions that you could ask a heavy hitter or an experienced grower, what would they be?

Why did you let your plants die of disease?

-how often with the ferts?
-what is the secret that heavy hitters keep from the rest of us?
-are you telling me the truth?

I don't believe there are any super "secrets". Years of "hard work", experience, trial and error, and a very good understanding of proper soil balance-watering-and AG life cycles, are the reasons these guys can consistently produce the results they do.
There are few "secrets" in life, only hard work gets real results.

I don't know..1400+ pounds & no ferts? Sounds like a super secret to me! Wow would I love to know how!

not looking for secrets, just looking to see what everyone would like to ask if given the chance to opportunity.

1. I would like to ask, what would be the ideal seed, from what crosses would you like to try.

2. how do you water your plants?

No secret...loads of manure, leaves, and organic materials. This provides all the fertilizer needed. *Soil balance*

1. Can I see a copy of your soil test results?

2. What is your pre-plant and weekly fertilzing rates?

3. What is tour insect and disease spraying program?

I agree wiyh southern, there are no secrets, stick to the basis, weed, water, prune, bury vines, ferilize and do it on a regular basis. No secrets, just alot of execution of the basics.

Once again, not looking for secrets folks, just interested in what questions growers would like answered, nothing can take away from years of experience and proper prep.

big bear took the words out of my mouth

those are the three very critical ingredients to getting a big one on the hook and making it all the way to the end

thats why bears and the nh group have become one of the best grower groups around

Will you tell everybody that I grew that 1600#er that's in your patch?

Does a pumpkin this size attract the ladies?

Can I have fries with that?

i think the numbe one question for growers with a new personal best is: what did you do different?

9/27/2004 10:32:48 AM

Lawmen

Here's what I'd ask...

1) Plant size; What is your opinion on how big your plants should be, or how small they can be (how many leaves, etc);
2) What's your opinion on the backfeeding debate;
3) Can ya break me off a little seed?

1} Could you start a cutting off the plant that grew your personal best?

2} Do you have any older seeds in your collection that you wouldn't mind parting with?

3}Why aren't all these old seed genetics listed in the AGGC???????

2) Why are we here ? ... and
3) Where are we going ?

OK - seriously
I would ask...
1) Can I see your soil test ?
2) What is your Fert schedule ?
3) What is your Watering schedule ?
4) Do you have any secrets that you can share with me ?

Do you use milk? ;-)

There ain't one big secret to it. Different stuff works for everyone. I think you need to follow the basics, and for the nitpicky stuff, evaluate your own situation and act accordingly.

ok, once again, not looking for any secrets, I'm going to have the opportunity to interview a few growers and I wanted to know what you would like to hear them answer.

What did Jim Kuhn say you couldn't tell us?

Madman,

As to why the AGGC does not have records of very old seeds, I would speculate it is because many growers just weren't keeping very good records of such things 15 or 20 years ago. Those seeds are of little importance today anyhow. Growing them out of curiousity is fine but I doubt many growers these days would want to go back and basically negate a decade or two of selection. Today's seeds are superior. The numbers speak for themselves.

Bohica (Tom)

AGitated,
I'm a rookie, but I might have to diagree with the older seeds being of little importance, these are in fact what todays seeds are made of, todays seeds are superior due to being crosses of these older genetics.
Growers can recreate the crosses that are very desireable.

But this is not why I started this thread.....LOL

9/28/2004 9:05:24 AM

AGitated

Bohica,

I realize that today's seeds are derived from those of old. That is what my use of the term 'selection' implied. If the AGS of which we speak were complex hybrids, I would agree that recreating the crosses would be of value. They are not complex hybrids though and a simple selection and reselection process of the top seeds we have now is a better solution.

I agree I'm off-topic. Sorry. Onward....

1- What 2003/2004 seeds do you believe are going to be hot?
2- How do you go about determining what seeds you are going to cross?
3- How much plant do you prefer before you pollinate?
4- How much plant do you let grow after you pollinate?
5- Do you trim any side vines?

Sorry about the extra couple of questions, I figured I would just use a couple up from the previous posts that didn't use any...LOL
