Hey!
I have been talking about the 1 foot raised bed I was going to build all season. Today, I finally did it. To some it may not seem like a huge acomplishment, but it was to me because I am young, almost 13, and I did it without the help of an adult, at all. And, it was totally free. I built the actual walls of it with small logs that came from trees we had cut down at an earlier date. To hold the logs up I cut tobacco sticks to my desired length. It took about 5 hours to complete. It is 8"-12" high. It will hold just a wee bit of soil. Problem #2, filling it in with soil. LOL

Good job Jake! Start rooting around for good quality compost/manure blends that you can till into the native soil. Perhaps if you network with the local established business-people arouind town, you might find one that can deliver for you. Good people have a hard time not wanting to help a young enterprising person like yourself.

Hey Jake,
Prior to dumping in any new soil, it is critical to dig down deeply into the old stuff & begin adding a quantity of the new material slowly as you go. This avoid creating a startified layering effect. When fresh light soil is dumped directly on top of a heavier native soil, the future of rooting & drainage is compromised. Sometimes just digging in some pea gravel & very coarse sand will help if drainage is questional. Then the high quality organic rich topsoil on top.
Since you're only going 8-12" higher though, I would focus on integrating a manure rich compost to add to the existing topsoil.
Do you have a line on a soil source yet? Farmer maybe?
