I know that a long stem is important for the pumpkins growth and position. But I do not know what is considered a long stem 3" 5"? Thanks

I my opinion 5 inches is long but 3 is short. One reason a long stem is better is because it is less likely to have the shoulders of the pumpkin grow into the vine when it starts to get really big. The most important thing is to position the pumpkin at a right angle to the vine and get the proper "S" in the vine to prevent these type of problems.
