Mine PB and Slovenian record pumpkin was stolen tonight. It was over 500 lbs the thieves had to be well organized and were sure not a bunch of teenagers. What to do? I will call the police and I hope they will not laugh at me... any advice?
I know that horse thieves were considered the most wicked of the thieves. But what kind of person is a pumpkin thieve!?
My season is over … I wish everybody to grow well and enjoy the rest of the season! Jernej

Congratulations on the new PB.
I am so sorry to hear of this thievery Jernej. It is a very low person who would steal your pumpkin.
Given the size of the fruit, perhaps Police will find it. One doesn't usually keep a 500 lb pumpkin in the house. If it is on display, it shouldn't be too hard to spot.

Thanks Steve, they took pics for newspaper now and the story will be out tomorrow. I hope somebody will spot it and phone in!
Oh yes, they also took a garbage container in which they transported it to the car trailer. They probaly couldn`t take the pumpkin out so they loaded alltogether. So, police will have to do its job and look for the container ...

I would phone the police. Maybe they'll laugh, but maybe they won't. It's worth a try. Congrats on your success, and good luck.

That isn't surprising....I had someone steal 10 of my one gallon container pots with some real old genetic plants in them. They were "nice" enough to leave the plants in the larger and smaller pots, though. They were not organized or very smart for that matter, as they left the pots that were marked " 805" "735" "1143", my main three. They just took the ones that were convienient to grab.
I never did find out who took them, but will be setting up a trap for them next spring. I strongly suggest murder as a possible solution to problems like these. Best wishes.... Madman

Jernej, good idea to inform police and diffuse the picture on newspaper. Congratulations for your new PB (and Slovenian record). I wish you a 1000 lbs for next year: much more difficult to steal. LOL Paolo

Aaaaaaarrrggghhh!!!!!! I HATE theives!!!! I think this is the worst pumpkin story I have ever read. Insects, disease, animal damage and splits are something we all have to face in this hobby. But the varmints that cart off a summers worth of work and dreams are the worst variety there is. Shooting is too good for them because it doesn't leave any time for them to suffer. I hope your police do take you seriously and are successful in apprehending these scum. I hope your judges get to face them in court and impose an appropriate sentence on them as well. This is not a kid's prank, or harmless fun. I hope you don't give up on this wonderful hobby in disgust and wish you the best of luck in all your future pumpkin growing efforts. Chris

It is a commomn occurance in my town about halloween time for jackolaterns and any available pumpkins to be rolled down some of the roads into town. A couple of years ago the local police caught a 40 year old man in the act. I hope your pumpkin can retrieved intact.

I went out to dinner one night to come home to my 400lb pumpkin just inches of hitting a brand new firebird. The town clowns thought it would be funny to roll it down the hill. I WENT NUTS. Hope you find the thieves.

I had a pumpkin theft attempt like yours a few years back, and I about bashed some heads in with my baseball bat as the thieves that looked like college kids tried to grab my 500+ fruit off of my porch. well I scared them off then called the police with a vehicle description, then the police thought I was crazy calling in a pumpkin theft attempt, so they sent out an officer. The officer arrived, and asked me what the problem is, and I told him some guys tried to steal my pumpkin. Well he looked at it and said well that is a fake pumpkin so what is the big deal, as I replied NO, it is real..Then he said why don't you bring it into the house, and I told him you want to help as it will not fit through the front door...lol Then the cop examined it and said do not worry I will be back with my kids tomorrow to take pictures with your pumpkin, it will be safe. The next day him and other fellow officers came and took pictures with it. Ever since that incident It has been a yearly ritual for the police to come and take pictures with my pumpkins, which is another reason I call them ( THE PUMPKIN POLICE )..LOL, as I have not had an attempted theft since then...lol.JK..

Thanks, it’s easier when you see that other people feel the same. The story was in the paper on Saturday (front and back page), on the radio and the police was on the site. The @!”#$&%* loaded the pumpkin + trash container (the pumpkin was probably stuck in the container) in a van. I took the pictures of tire marks (front and rear).. so, if the suspects show up, I can be absolutely sure if they are the real thieves before I take some action!
The good side of the story is that the pumpkin has more publicity than it would ever had without being stolen..

I can't wait for the day when I go to a "theft of pumpkin" call. I'm going to have DNA samples taken, fingerprints, tire tread analysis, psychological profilers, a nationwide fan-out, the "amber alert", a helicopter with infra-red, and I'll even throw in a psychic or two. I'll catch the @#$^@& !!!! LOL

Hey Lawman, are you the county mounty, as we used to call them in canada...lol, I think a good clue as to who done it ( The Theft ) in Slovenia, is look for big pumpkins growing in least obvious sites hidden from view next spring, and or lots of seedlings striving to live on a pumpkin dump site where the fruit was disposed of ...lol...That maybe some future little growers will stumble upon...And in the end come up with a big pumpkin of their own...That many other little growers like themselves years before strived for ....Such is the sport of the giant pumpkin growing...lol
