Hello! I just recently found this sight and was wondering how many of us BC'ers are out there? Was also wondering about local weigh offs, are there any, and when they might be? I see a few grower diary's from BC towns with an especially nice pumpkin out of Nanaimo. Anyhow just thought I'd say hello, what with no hockey, this might be the only interesting thing going this winter.

Chad:
Welcome aboard, You have a couple great growers in the province Jake VanKooten and Archie Lingl both have thrown 1,000+ pumpkins.
I'm not sure were Jake is but Archie is in Kelowna and is a hell of a nice guy...
Archie also goes to smoky lake Alberta with his fruit.

There's a few of us. So far I'm the only one I've found in Vancouver, but there's the North Shore Boyz in North van, growing a plethora of large pumpkins, all of which are bigger than mine. The BC "heavy hitters" are over on the Island (for now)... Welcome to the site.

Oh ya, Jake VanKooten is from the Island, as is Craig Sandvik, both of whom have grown over 1,000 lbs. Looks like Dave Pley from Nanaimo has some great ones growing this year, too.

Thanks for the info, but what about weigh offs in BC? I am a seed potato farmer here in Pemberton so I have the equipment to weigh my pumpkins myself, but I would like to meet some fellow lunatics and maybe learn a little along the way.
This isn't my first year growing these things, but it is the first time I've taken it a little seriously. I harvested and weighed one two days ago that came out at 298# which is new PB for me, but still have one going at 267 ott and doing about 8-10# a day so maybe we'll hit 400 by Sunday. If only the weather would co-operate.
Thanks again,Chad

Hey Chad, check out this website. I don't know how current the info is, but give it a shot. It says there's a weigh-off in Armstrong, BC. Hope this helps. Alan www.backyardgardener.com/gpcpumpkin.html

Howdy Chad, I'm in Pemberton too. I bought Tony Bikadi's little shake house on the meadows (7610)last summer, you probably know the one. Grew AG and bigmax for the first time this year, best was 74 pounds. Next year I'll try some fert aside from manure. The biggest one will be carved out front on Halloween if you see this by then. Drop by anytime. Dennis Taylor
