Can one still get some growth on a pumpkin when the stump roots are rotted?

I have not been successful, Dave! I have heard of some who even cut off the main vine from the stump....and still got some growth!

Dave - If you have buried the main you have nothing to worry about.

My best fruit lost its stump about a month ago, still growing a tad bit.

This weather we've had lately is rotting everything. I've covered the pumpkin and all of the vine all the way back to the stump to try and keep it somewhat dry. I remember reading in a post somewhere that you can still get some growth from the roots growing out of the vine. I have been watching your diary, so I know you've got your vines buried. Is it your 1016 or your 845?

im not braging just letting everyone know that sometimes when a base shits the bed its not over, not by a long shot on 7-20 at 100 lbs est, our 1068 plant developed a disease situation and as a precaution rather than watch the plant go down ( quickly ) we removed the base and all the main except for a 3 ft piece with one secondary on each side before the pumpkin the plant may be all of 150 sq ft today and the pumpkin taped 915 lbs last friday and still doing 8 lbs/ day sooooooooooooooooooo ----- dont give up on a problem plant you may not always save it ,but its worth a try

i rotted out a stump this year (my fault), but the fruit kept growing. it probably put on more than half it's total weight after the stump was lost. it's probably the best argument for burying the main vine (since some don't like to do it). the fruit probably weighs 4-500 pounds, but that is way more than i expected out of that plant.

Lawman,it's all my plants with stump rot. Just too wet. Thanks to everyone that replied, kind of encouraging,so hopefully will keep the growth going. Pretty hard to do with the weather we have had, basically since aug 23rd. Ever since then the heat has shut off. Can't remember a september like this.

Dave, I'm just south of you on Whidbey, couldn't agree more with you about the weather since the 23rd. I've tried to cover most portions of the vine with pvc pipe hoops and plastic to keep things from getting too wet, pretty much like Lawman did. Might help, can't hurt. Good luck. WPM
