I have 17 pumpkins growing now, a half dozen of them are large (524lbs - 703 lbs), but only 3 of them have started to turn orange. When if ever will they turn orange??? I would hate to have white pumpkins come halloween..

Are these pumpkins getting any sun? Some genetics throw white or cream pumpkins. What are the genetics on the seeds you planted.

Yes, all of the pumpkins are getting sun. I took my tarps down the 1st. of sept. I ordered all of my seeds directly from Howard Dill, they were from 500, 700 & 900 lb. pumpkins.

Then, if they were from open pollinated stock, it's anybody's guess what color they will throw. Do they look yellowish, or cream? In general, early/mid season yellow fruit show more orange color at the end of the season. The cream/white ones usually stay lighter colored...At this point in the season, I'd say they should be showing some decent orange color already if they are going to be orange.

P.S. You going to St. John's?

I thought Howard Dill pollinated his pumpkins under controlled conditions, but I wouldn't know for sure. I have some pumpkins that are yellowish and some that are white. Two of my largest pumpkins which were pollinated mid July, are very white still.

I'm going to be in S.D. pheasant hunting the weekend of the St. John weigh off, but am trying to get my brother to take my largest pumpkin up for the fair. He may opt for the fair in Dundee though.

Thanks for the reply Frank

As far as I know Howard's 350-500, 500-700 and 700-900lbs seeds are grown in open field so none of them are controlled pollinated.
However, the field is far away from any other fields with pumpkin crops so that the seeds can only be pollinated within the Atlantic Giant strain.

If you are looking for seeds with controlled crosses for next year you have to order seeds of Howard's premium seed list that is usually posted in Dec. and some seeds will be sold out quickly.

If you have too much money you can of course also order seeds from P&P seeds (Ray Waterman) and if you would like to save your money you can get seeds with great, controlled crosses from me.....lol

come december or so the gpc weighoff sights will post results from most if not all gpc weighoffs

if you get the names and addresses of growers that have good seed stocks then all you need to do is send them a note along with a stamped self addressed padded envelope and most will respond with excellent seed stocks
( much more proven then packaged field stock )
