I'm sure just about 1 out of every 3 growers could post to the previous post {maybe less than that!}. Those posting to that thread, pretty please include the genetic that split {or post here}. If there is a possible theory what you think contributed to your split, then spit it out...

The more info we have, the better we can pick and choose what we grow, or should I say, what we wanna take a chance on growing!

I have 2 that split myself:

695 Hoomis {567 Wallace X self}
563 Geerts

I blame BOTH on genetic make up. Neither had any adverse condition which might have encouraged the plant to split.

I do think cold nights do have a lot to do with splitting...

The second 675 cracked from stem to stern. I had been giving it lots of calcium towels and foliar applications on the leaves too. Cool weather is the biggest factor. They just can't take stopping and starting. Weather is a form of stress that is hard to control without setting up greenhouse.

I had my 501 beachy split. But it is definatly weather related! Our temps have been from 65 for a week to 80-85 the next.

mad man
we lost to splits this year
805 pukos
723 bobier
783 delatas
the 805 and 723 split on the same morning in early august right after a cold spell ( yes we always cover our pumpkins every night from basketball size out , unless its very humid and going down below 65 )
the 723 developed a small split in the blossom at mid nines
the 805 was over 8 inches thick so being a very dense fruit did not matter
it is my belief that some are just prown to split due to a weak spot inside the fruit
the inner area or fruit itself has a weak spot that splits as the growth occurs and, as the fruit grows the split or ( inside out wedge ) continue to open as the fruit grows until it breaches the outer surface

my 801 stelts and 610 wolf both split their main vine fruits, but the ones i kept on secondaries on each plant are doing well.
