I have heard that a lot of growers are having there pumpkins split left and right. I was just wondering how much truth there is to this and who has had them split so far.

It was probably my own fault for selecting a fruit that looked 60 days old at day 20, but we have one fruit on our 842 Eaton that has split every time I've pressed it for growth. The other fruit on the same plant has been fine as well as our other 2 on the 845 Bobier.

So far in the northeast, monster fruits have been lost to split by big names as Alan Nesbitt, Ned Sandercock, and Doc Meisner (his may have made it, havent heard since he got scared a week ago). I cut some secondary vines before our big rains last week, and will watch closely. SPlitsville USA seems to be the Northeast area this year. I have heard rumors of a lot of splits in the New England areas also..

2 so far....

695 Hoomis {567 Wallace X self}
563 Geerts

Both had none of the known conditions which might have encouraged either to split, so I'd think they both just had it in their minds from day one they were going to split....

1 out of 5 big ones so far. 801.5 Stelts. Huge split underneath. When it started to first show surface signs almost the whole pumpkin had already turned to liquid. When I opened it up, here was the pumpkin mat staring up at me through this huge split. Scary.

But no splits so far on my 641 Wilbers, which has my biggest fruit. -- Chris

Both fruit on 771 Holland plant have stem splits. The smaller one is toast but the larger one is hanging on some how with a wide long and deep gash running North to South right through the stem. 1097 Beachy fruit has stem split as well, but hasn't worsened since it occurred.

yep blossom end this year, previously all had been stem splits, I sprayed the stems with Calcium this year, I have no idea if that helped.

I've had more splits this year....don't think its the fruits genetics...too much rain....can't control the input if one can't control the moisture levels....another point has been our cool then hot weather, not very constant ...these plants can produce awesome growth rates and for fruit to survive we need to control as much as possible their food source and enviroment..

2 here. Thew wierd thing is, the fruit that have split are barely over 100 pounds. I think cold weather may play a huge role.

Lost two of three. Both were approaching 600 lbs or more when they split. Both are pictured on Ball4 diary entry.
