Why do some seeds sink and others float and which is better?

Stan is there any difference? A sinker would have no accumulated vapour inside which would make it more dense. Is there any merit to enhanced viability of the seed and its offspring? I'm searching for correlation and understanding of this perplexing question.

one thing i have found is that the longer the seeds are in a ROTTING or ROTTED pumpkin, you know, stewing in the juice, the more likely they are to sink once they are put into, oddly, the SINK! perhaps there is pressure or something inside the seeds that eventually finds its way out, and i have NOT seen any difference in germination, viability, etc. perhaps they would ALL sink eventually--------eric
