Well, I know it's late, but I couldn't get a female to open until about 2 weeks or so ago. Well, now it is about the size of a basketball. Is this good, bad, normal?

If you're happy Jake, then it sounds like good stuff. You keep that late set going & enjoy it!
While we did get fruit set in early July this year, I never could get a Log Gourd to set. Ever! I finally ripped the vines down Sunday. Believe me, I would have taken a late set to none at all. LOL

You can cover it with plastic to keep the frost off and get it to the indian summer. Sounds good sized to me!!!!
