I am totatly confused as to what seeds to grow out next season. I have finaly gotten my dirt to turn into soil. I have made several prime contacts for seeds. The problem I have is, what/who are you going to grow out for 2002? I will be able to grow out two plants at home, and two share croppers plots, that is the most I can properly take care of. I have just retrieved some great looking seed, with big time lineages from my specimins. Plus I have a great pumpkin seed library in which to choose from.... How do you decide what to plant in 2002? Especially since the world record is twice my best weight!

I'm going with the seeds I have that have produced the best for other growers in this part of the country. For me that means the 940 Mombert 98, 723 Bobier 99, and 1026 Holland 00. Of course I reserve the right to change my mind about 120 times between now and April when they hit the peat pots. I'll be looking closely at how well others in my collection have performed when the information gets into the AGGC site. I'll be going with three plants next year with no plans for an intentional squash. Sorry Glenn, I like them, but four plants is too much work and I want the tonnage. I'm tired of growing middleweights.

Your choice of seed to grow next year will cause salivation on the part of most growers!

my mind will also change about a 1000 times between now and them but I plan to grow regionally local seeds. I'm planning on growing some of my own crosses from this year and a couple of wildcards for excitement. I used to want to grow for just poundage but really like the prettier ones too so I'll look at the genetics and pick the best seeds I can for what I want. I'm learning more about genetics every year, I should have a handle on it sometime before the decade is out!

I find genetics to be very interesting, a lot of big pumpkins can be traced back to the same or similar oragins. Tom

Hey GADS, I'll grow some of yours again in 2002. I'll send you some from the tan seed of yours (the LaRue 1016 x Waterman-Geerts-Zehr 1006x1061 I think) I crossed with a UOW decendant of the Holland 792 & Castellucci 682. Hope this doesn't confuse things even more.

Hi Korney, Nice cross...I hear what your saying brother!Send me a couple, and I will send you a couple of my crosses from this year. I have some dirty snow white seeds that I got out of my 644# (410 Gadberryx1026 Holland). Nice big seeds not white and not brown, also my seeds from my clone are small and extremely dark brown, almost black! I only had 121 seeds from my 644#, 321 seeds from my Clone, and I haven't opened my Holland 1026 yet as I gave it to Eastern Washington University to use as a fund raiser for our Country Men in New York (Salvation Army). It will probably be smashed during their home comming!

I plan to grow seeds that will throw pumpkins that have the characteristics i like. Everyone(well most) likes deep orange, and i do to, but they usally go light, but not always. I am going with seeds that have or have the potential throw pumpkins 50+ or more lbs over that charts.....those seeds that throw the heavy pumpkins(and squmpkins) are usually not as orange. somtimes not even close to orange. Every one has different preferences....just go for the seeds you like best, or ones that will give you a chance at a 1000....(green or orange).

The 1262 Emmons was 50 pounds heavy, not all deep orange ones go light, but most do, like the 1230 and 1140, both off of the 705 Stelts and very orange. Tom

Farmer Tom, I have a video of Emmons at Canby, She estimated her very orange 1262 @ 1280 so I guess her world record was a little LITE. Also Steve Delatis's beautiful orange Pumpkin was estimated off the chart, yet it came in at 1230.

I heard the 1262 was est. at 1212, and the 1230 at 1346. How much hooting and hoolering was there when the scales read 1262? Tom
