Hi just wondering who is going to be entering a pumpkin in the Topsfield Fair this October? I may be going as a spectator. I may bring a pumpkin not sure yet, looks like there may be many people who have real big ones there. Anyone who has gone before have any tips???? Thanks! Doeski Ps… Hope to meet some of you there!!!!

We'll probably weigh-off ar Durham if we do at all. But Topsfield is a "must attend".
Don't bring the kids. They get bored & you'll miss stuff. Do bring a camera with a potent flash. Bring business cards. Have a notebook or a good data back if shooting 35mm or... read the manual for your digital so you can title images. If it rains you don't need an umbrella. We're under a tent. If you can't stay all day, then arrive late & stay to the end. Try to go with a Topsfield veteran. If you have the back for it, volunteer to carry. Bring cash for cool Pumpkin accoutrements like tape measures & autographed books & fun stuff like that. Try not to tell people with ugly fruit that you think it's ugly. They already know & might punch you in the nose. LOL
I hope to see you there too. Maybe BP name tags like we didn't have at Niagara would be a good idea?

I'm going there... but only in my dreams!
Would love to go there but don't have the money for the flight! bummer!
I'm sure it would be a great experience to see those HUGE pumpkins and meet all those wonderful growers... but I'll have to settle on the pics you guys take! Don't forget your cameras! lol

Thanks guys, good info Tremor! Hey the nametag thing is a good idea. How could we arrange this?
If I bring a pumpkin it would have to stay the whole week right? I cannot stay the whole week so that is what is making me not want to bring one. I believe I will have a nice fruit to display, it is real purrty. Light orange with cream colored stripes, it looked like a giant lemon for a long time but now everyday is looking more and more like a pumpkin. How about places to stay should I be reserving a place? And what is a good place close by? Thanks! Doeski

Unlike some weighoffs, the minimum weight required to enter is 350# at Topsfield, just something to keep in mind. The reason they have a minimum is that time in the areana is limited and with 60-80 fruit to weigh it takes about 4 hrs. plus re-loading time.

Can we use wilt pruf at the Topsfield fair? If so do you dilute the solution or just put it on full strength?

Doeski, I don't know about Wilt-Proof, but I can say that I used Pledge one year and never again. It sure made it look pretty and shiny! At Topsfield they use lifting teams to transfer your AG from your pallet to an "official" one for weighing. That means rolling the pumpkin up, setting a lifting tarp, rolling back down and lifting up the other side to pull it through. That Pledge made the 'kin slipperier than a greased pig!!! Gave those poor guys a workout chasing that 'kin around! Just a thought.

I believe the rules clearly state that no skin treatment is permitted. Whether the rule is ever enforced I can't say.
