Well, it appears that our cheesehead friends have found a solution to their cold weather, they sent it to Germany! I don't know what I did wrong to piss you guys off, but please take it back, it is to early for fall! Joe, Shannon, Brigitte, April, Randoo, are you out there? What do we have to sacrifice to appease you?

Owen,
Yes, fall seems to be here.... weather forecast is calling for nothing over 20°C and about 7 to 9°C at night..... and of course rain, rain, rain... Bummer! All fruits seem to have stopped growing with the 4°C night we had two days ago...
I did my part in appeasing those Wisconsin guys, at least Shannon and April...

Hey you guys.... I am so sorry that you are getting that weather! It SUCKS! It had really slowed our growth in Wisconsin. Now it is saying 80-85 for this week and back down to 75 by this weekend. I do appreciate you doing your part for us. And I will do the same for you guys! I don't know what kind of crappy weather we are getting this year but I hope it doesn't get any worse! we had frost last weekend.. YUCK!
My thoughts are with you guys

All I have to say is you have to sacrifice a few plants like alot of growers did last Saturday Morning. I am glad even though I did not see frost I spayed the patches down after a restless night of screwed up dreams. The outskirts of April's patch and the Jack o Lantern field got nipped.

Thats a bummer Owen. We were aiming for France when we kicked that system outa here but I guess we kicked a little hard and it ended up in Germany. We'll aim a little better next time.

Well, I can't sacrifice the whole plant, but I can scarifice 2 pumpkins. Two days ago I found a stem split on my 628 olsen, it is not all the way into the cavity yet, but it is a good inch or so. 10 minutes ago I found another stem split, on my 805 pukos. also not all the way through, but about 1/2 inch into it. I guess I should be grateful that I even have pumpkins to split. I do believe the cold weather caused the splits, as the pumpkins still put on 10 and 15 pounds per night, and with this cold weather the stem just could not take it.
Joe, next time is next year, you have plenty of time to practice.

The weather in Germany sounds tropical compared to here. There high over a 5 day period was 9 decrees C!!!

Well, its finally been warm here...around 70-80, with nearly 100 percent humidity but NO sun the last three days with this warmth...what good is it without sun???????????????
WE cant win....still, some growers are going to pull out some decent fruit anyways. I wont be one of them. It seems odd years are the ones that favor my patch.

I won't be one of them either Case.... lol... Owen, now you know how we've been feeling all summer long! I wouldn't wish this weather upon anyone. Weather man said an average of 7 below normal for the month of August this year.

Thanks for your kind words, April, Shannon, Joe....
I always thought that I am having a really bad year this year.... my fruits are the same small size as Owen's but they are still sound...
But what is happening in your patches, Owen and Joe, is just horrible! What a bad luck!!!
Joe, looks a lot like vandalism to me...I don't think a PVC pip can do such damage on its own...
I couldn't imagine that a pumpkin growing only 10lbs a day could split like that, Owen! And now it not only happened to you on one pumpkin but on both.... and even if I don't hope that to happen, I guess those splits on your two fruits will go all way though to the cavity as the pumpkin packs on some more weight...
WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR!!!!!

Too bad about the cold, Owen, but like Brigitte said above, we've been dealing with this crap all summer in Wisconsin. But it sounds like other areas have had it just as bad if not worse. I don't think I'd like to trade places with Minnesota or Colorado pumpkin growers. My hat's off to you guys.

As always, it is could to share our misery as well as our successes. This post started off as a little friendly humor, as I know you great people from Wisconsin, and Mn (Mr B), can handle that. Funny how one season from another is so different. Oh well, I have learned a lot about myself this year, it is hard to handle things that are oout of your control, but it is good to know that we can share.
Yes Martin, next year for sure. I am still going to our weigh off, even if my pumpkin only weighs 50 pounds. I will not give up.

If it wasn't for being able to laugh it off, and realize Mother Nature is gonna do whatever she likes...Half of us (or more) would be headed for some creepy asylum , muttering pumpkin speak while twisting in our straight jackets! Yeah, weather sucked, yeah, we have a hot humid stretch goin' on now, yeah....cool down forecasted for the coming week...30 days to weigh off here...We shall see
