A few weeks back I had a pumpkin that was progressing very nicely (beach ball size) that developed a hole in it. Luckily I had another one started. ( I only have one plant). My new one is progressing nicely, however, I don't have any other one growing should something happen to this one. My plant has soem other female blossoms on it but no males. My girlfriend is growing a Prizewinner pumpkin. She has a pretty nice pumpkin growing on her plant, and lots of male blooms. What i was wondering was is it possible to use a male blossom from her plant (the Prizewinner) to pollinate a female blossom on my AG? Would the results be subpar on this pumpkin?

hmmmm....now that's a good question, and i'm very curious to hear the answer, because, i have no idea! i do know that as long as the prizewinner is a curcubita maxima like the ag (not sure if it is) then the cross will work. and i also know the pollination will in no way affect the growing fruit, only the seeds inside. but i have no idea what the ofspring will be like. anyone? scott

Where are you located? I would try to get some male AG flowers, from someone nearby. Your other option may work, but I think you'd end up with a big Prizewinner or a little AG, or something in between!

Yes you can use the the Prizewinner males to pollinate your AG they are both the variety (Cucurbita Maxima) the Prizewinner pollen will not affect the size of the pumpkin, you are growing an Atlantic Giant so you will get Atlantic Giant pumpkins -- however the Prizewinner genectics will be passed into the seeds and next years pumpkins if grown from these seeds will show Prizewinner traits.
