Mine have started to seriously rib out, which I always thought doesn't add to overall dimensions that much, but does add to weight considerably. I am also wrestling with some splits on the pumpkins. I think with cool July & August nights they began to harden prematurely. Now it has been very warm again and humid. They have begun to grow again, but split. I've filled the splits with Captan paste to no avail, and then just recently added some latex caulk. My thought is that, while it may impact me for a weigh-off, at least I'll still have the fruits. "Big Bird" is 305 1/2 OTT, and "Godzilla" is 299 1/2. Any other suggestions for dealing with these splits let me know.

are you talking about splits on the skin of the pumpkin? Like around the shoulders and in the ribs on the shoulders? That's normal, it just means you're going to have one Cataloped pumpkin! Which is good I think cause those are usually the pumpkins that weigh real heavy.

oh, well if they are big and deep, then those are bad... If they go into the cavity then you are done.

Ah, Yoda has spoken. The pumpkin has splits, Yes!?
For many years, Master, your wisdom has seen me through these turbulent times. Through our strength we have risen above the evil empire of Phytophotora, Vine Borers, and Bacterial Wilt.
Alas, as a young pumpkin Jedi I must begin to chart my own course through this self-created universe. I must meet, alone, and conquer the evil ones, so that the force that is within me will continue to grow.
Truly, A Young Pumpkin Jedi
