Saw a couple of examples of this on tour.

I know of a few examples where this technique has produced 1K + pounders. Joel Holland and Craig Sandvik come to mind.

Hey Cape Cod Steve is there a trailing vine on you 1016 Daletas? From that last pic in your diary it looks like it's gone.

I've got only the pumpkin and the main vine growing(all else is terminated). Is there much risk of cutting the main vine, and putting all the energy into the pumpkin? Do you think it will help significantly in the growth rate.
My pumpkin is 77" circumference on day 29. It grew 3 3/4" circumference in the last day(16 lbs), and cooler weather is forecasted for several days(highs in 70's, some lows in the 40's).
Only fertilization I'll do is twice a week foliar feeding, and a once a week, at most, soil drench with Neptune's Fish and Kelp.
I'm thinking I might as well cut off the main. Anyone against this? The main is about 12' past the pumpkin.

Doug, I hack the main when it's about 15' past the fruit, and I've heard many other do this, too, as nobody can really say for sure that the leaves farther out than this actually contribute anything to the fruit.

HI Mr McClew I will let you know, i have a plant that is shitty, and the main vine runs out at least 20 feet and there comes the pumpkin, the pumpkin was in a bad position so i cut off the main vine going past the pumpkin now there is no vines past the pumpkin. I decided to keep the pumpkin on the main vine as the secondaries wernt that good, it is now 25 inches cir grew 3 inches cir in one day, its starting to take off now, pushing the 0 0 60 and the calcium nitrate 15 .5 - 0 - 0 in a ratio 2 to 1, i was told to do this, i am now not using the 20 20 20 as i was told not to use it at all or i will bung the plant up
