Just got my scale from PGVG, and I can weigh pumpkins for anyone that wants to drive here to weigh it. Split, solid, whatever. I will have it certified in the next day or 2.

There's a guy who makes them for us, they're a inline digital scale. I'm not sure how high it goes but it's high enough!!! lol They have a nice digital readout and everything. If you're really interested I can get your Jim Sherwoods email and he can tell you more about it. They're very nice scales.

Ya, Digital readout, with or without battery option. Its accurate to 0.5 lbs, and can weigh up to 2500 lbs. just a little smaller than what my pumpkins will weigh....LOL
It was 630 bucks with shipping.....but now all my fruit will have certified weights, and I can get them official with an extensions agent present. Eliminates the problem of having so many pumpkins, and only 4 contests for dad and I.

For the unofficial smaller pumpkins, use a nursing home wheel chair scale. They usually go up to 1000 # and I have borrowed one for our little local contest at no cost. If anyone goes above 1000# we plan on taking them out to the local dairy farmer who has a cattle scale built right in the barn. Sure beats $630.

If your in it for the long haul or will have a 100 or so fruit or more (like the Beachys) this is a good investment.
Also good for the Hitters to use when they have 2 really big fruit. How in the world are you gonna determine which one to take when they are both 370+" ott? Unless one of them is a Weir or Knauss it is a toss up as to which one *might* go heavy.
Remember on Garden Giants last year when Geoffry Pierce had this issue?

Tom, Even though you will have a "certified scale", it will still not yield "Official" pumpkin weights, correct? I thought that in order to be "Official", it had to be done at a sanctioned weigh-off.

It all depends on whose rules you use. If you want a GPC certified pumpkin, to be listed on the GPC top 20 or whatever, then yes you'd need to go to a GPC weighoff.
But there is nothing wrong with having your fruit weighed on any certified scale. It's official as far as I'm concerned. (And, I'm the only one who matters, after all, LOL...) Just get a few witnesses and follow all the convential rules regarding fruit soundness, don't weight it with the tarp, etc. It's very official.
We're planning to do a weighoff here in one grower's backyard.

Stan, if its really big I can get an extensions agent to come out to the house and watch us weigh it, and then its official. Plus the hoard of other growers. Who said I couldnt have my own weighoff anyway? LOL
The guy certified it for me for free today. I showed him a picture of the pumpkin, and all of the sudden there was no charge.

Why not hold an annual "Tom Welty" weigh off? Here are 10 main things governing the event: ------------------------------------------------------------
1} Winner gets bragging rights for one year
2} Looser has to cough up 3 seeds of anything the winner wants from loosers seed collection
3} Only two contestants allowed per year to compete
4} No color verification or verification for rotting allowed, also, no judges allowed
5}All Other growers will be allowed to bring and weigh fruits as exhibition pumpkins with no prize money. Other growers required to buy all the beer and supply all the food
6}Nobody at contest allowerd to ask "Whats the cross on that one" to save huge amounts of time when Nic weighs his
7}results will not be posted for several weeks afterwards
8}Strippers will be pre- weighoff entertainment
9}Contest starts at 10 AM, ends at 11 PM with fruits being weighed on every 5 minute intervals in order weigh ALL of the fruits
10}Admission $10 per person, $20 for annoying children $30 for crying infants or girlfriends
