What does everyone use to make the pumpkin skin shine? I have seen some pictures in Dairies, and of course at fairs where the pumpkins are shiny.

Pledge or Olive Oil. Depends on the color.

Caution with making them shiny...Some events you are not allowed to coat pumpkins or they are disqualified. I used leafshine one year and had the slipperiest pumpkin. Olive oil works good to. Then a good soapy bath the day before the weigh-off. Some pumpkins it is just in the genetics to throw big shiny orange pumpkins.

One more thing applying oil sometimes brings out the green.

wilt proof is the best we have found for holding in the moisture and the wax in wilt proof gives the skin a nice shine
wilt proof is good to apply between weighoffs to help reduce weight loss
it is sold primarily for wintering shrubs to keep the leaves and vines from drying out
most garden shops and walmart sell it

That's what I used Wilt-Proof with a U.V. Inhibitor in it...It's some slippery stuff

Thanks for the tip!
I have also been asking the question weather or not to expose my pumpkin to the sun before harvest. Is it best to do this because it will harden the skin and make it more protected against bumps and scrapes?

This may not be the correct topic for this post but OH WELL! If not for Ken D and John D., many of you would have never heard of an Atlantic Giant DILL Pumpkin. I know I never would have! This has to be THE premiere site for any grower. Whether you grow AGs or any other fruit or veggie. I visit this site daily and have been for going on five yrs. The best growing info can be found here! Lot's of expertise. (Don't forget entertaining and images out the ying-yang too!!) Thanks again Ken and John!! Best of luck to you and yours!
