I didn't take the veteran growers seriously when they described the smell of a rotten Atlantic Giant Pumpkin!
Oh my word, unless you've smelled it for yourself you would not believe how bad it is!
THANK YOU to everyone who posts information on this site and everyone who takes the time to help us inexperienced growers. Pumpkin growing is indeed addictive. After my second year of hard work with no pumpkin to show for it, I am discouraged, but I'm already thinking about next year. My pumpkin this year was 164 pounds (according to the chart) at 30 days. I left for an 8 day vacation in sunny Florida and came home to a beautiful looking pumpkin except that the bottom had become a smelly pile of mush. Too much rain in Pennsylvania this year for my pumpkin, but I'm still thankful for the rain. Last year I only made it to 80 pounds and then it rotted.
Thank you again to everyone! Keep em growing!

Moral of the story; If you don't spot them early, keep a few strategically located buckets around the patch. They're not just for personal comfort.

Break them up into chucks before tossing them onto the compst pile & bury them too if there's time.
