This topic is usually posted about this time of year (or a little earlier). So - anyone get suprised by an unexpected squash, or by an orange one you were hoping would go green?

here's mine - 463 wolf went green on me this year. COMPLETELY unexpected. the 463 was a pumpkin from the 815 andersen, and the pollinator plant was the 920 cole. should have been bright orange in my opinion, especially if you saw the plants that seed was created from.

I think Rock's 717 threw him for a loop this year.

Was that the 895 Hester selfed? The 900 Lyons strikes again.

Anyways it sure is a beautiful orange.

this is my first year growing and i didn't know that a pumpkin could be anything but orange. mine went from green to white than to light green and now it is light green with splashes of dark green. is it up in the air or does anybody know if it will settle on one color??

sometimes they change. A grower in our state named Vince Zunino grew a beautiful white pumpkin last year. A week or so before harvest, it started turning orange. At harvest, he started noticing green flecks. a few days later it started really turning green! a couple weeks after it was off the vine, it was mostly green... of course, I am telling this all from the memory of an email I received 8-9 months ago. The actual story could be different, but the result was the same... it started off white, and turned green after the weigh-off.

Wierd? yep. But that's one of the things we love about ags! We are always guessing!

Andy,
I jumped off the green train so quick, I almost hurt myself. My 717 Rockwell went dark orange in 25 days and blew out the blossom at 200 lbs.

Jim,
I had 2 orange 810's and 1 white 810 in the 3 I have planted.

717 Mitchell is putting out creamy white fruit for me. It's not what I expected from a plant with the 723 and 801.5 in its pedigree.

Tiller,

My 717 Mitchell is also white right now. No telling what will happen later though.

Andy....why the surprise? You know the 815 does green....and the 920 has produced a few greenies that were trashed early on.....I'd raise an eyebrow, but not a real surprise.......G

i guess you had to see the fruit. the 463 itself was a regular orange color, not a fleck of green to it. the pollinator (920 cole), grew the pumpkin on the left in this pic: http://home.eznet.net/~farm/pics/388260.jpg the pic doesn't show it well, but it had that good mombert/stelts orange color (except for where the sun bleached it out a little). i had heard of the mutants with the 920, but i figured mine was one of the lucky ones. oh well, no big deal i guess. at least i am glad in a way that i ended up with a green plant this year.

Have there been any 567 offspring that were green? Any clues as to who Helmet got his genetics from?

Mr. Sprout, I grew the 950.4 Boyton this year and it was a beautiful white pumpkin but as it sits on the vine it is now turning orange around the stem and the last few days green flecks have been showing up more and more.
