Just thought I would try to get everyone's opinion on why my A.G just never really took off. The leaves came through the soil on 5/30. Today the plant is 13' with one fruit 6' out. It never developed a rear main and has only a couple secondaries about 2'. This is my first year trying to grow an A.G but I have grown other pumpkins. The soil and the treatment is the same for the A.G as the others. The A.G. is next to a Connecticut and you would swear the Conn. is the A.G. It grows a foot a day and has secondaries at every node (but it has a disease that I can not seem to control.) The A.G is given daily foliar feedings with Neptunes and regular fertilization. The plant has been disease and pest free. We did get a good amount of rain this year. The fruit was pollinated on 7/20 and I have a picture of how it looks today. I just look at some of the diary entries and many have beautiful, full plants. What do think is up with mine? My seeds were bought at an Agway store. I would like to hear any opinions. Thanks.... Blain, Same as Slychit, link isn't working. Also, I agree with Sly, are you sure they are AG seeds? My 1st year trying to grow a giant I bought giant pumpkin seeds at walmart and got like 100 pounder. Then I got seeds from people on this site and last year was my first AG true seed growing and WOW!! what a difference, 699 pounder last year. If your not sure about the seed, post a request at this site and dozens and dozens of people will give you great seeds for no charge to use next year, including me. Try and get the link fixed, and many will give you responses as to what they think the problem might be.

Links are working now. Not sure why you have no secondaries. But if you really want to grow a big one, till up that grass and add organic material (manure, compost, etc) this fall and work that in. You need 400-600 Sq ft. per plant to grow a big one and get the seeds potential. You can grow them over the grass like you are doing, but it will never reach its potential and the size of the fruit will be very limited.
Hope that helps,
Mike

Late start. Fruit set on too little plant. Grass & compacted soil limitting secondary roots. Was a soil test done? Were any amendments tilled in or has this grass been there a while?
You might want to pick up Don Langevin's "How to Grow World Class Giant Pumpkins #2" There a 3 books in this set. But I would start with #2 for now.

All of the advice certainly makes sense. I'm just not sure why a Connecticut plant next to it is doing so great. It has secondaries and roots at every node. All my other pumpkin plants are fine also. This isn't over for me yet!! I will do what ever I can to get the best I can out of this pumpkin. Thanks to everyone for help.
