I have been noticing on my pumpkin's that the stem is splitting. I am wondering if this is normal..and how big should I expect the split to get? the bigger the pumpkin gets..the more splits I am noticing. Should I use a fungicide to try and close it? I have noticed on one of my pumpkins that the stem has healed itself....will this continue?...or do I have a problem that needs to be addressed?

Do the splits just stretch across the surface, or do they go all the way through the stem tissue to the hollow inside of the stem? Surface ones will heal themselves usually. The ones that go all the way through are the ones to worry about... most people treat them with a fungicide, and/or set up a small fan to keep them dry.

ya , i have the same problem. mine just looks like the pumpkin is going to crack(pop) right off the stem where it meets the vine.i'm kinda worried. first year and my pumpkin is measured at 300lbs.. this sucks. i guess only time will tell. i don't give it much more than two weeks.

Yomama,
Be elated and overjoyed that you grew a 300# pumpkin your first year! (You have no idea yet what "sucking" really is!)

This is the second time I've seen "sucking" mentioned here. What does it refer to?
